There’s nothing like a bargain — especially when shopping for property.
Whether you’re after a first home, a buy-to-let or simply fancy a project, you could make substantial savings by taking on somewhere with a sitting tenant, short lease or requiring loads of work — or that’s simply dropped in price because it’s failed to sell.
Avoid nasty, and expensive, surprises by getting a survey done, calculating refurbishment and other costs and investigating potential yields if you’re planning to rent it out. These cut-price properties should whet your appetite.
1. Ventnor, Isle of Wight, opening bid £10
Yes, you read it correctly — bidding on this two-bedroom house starts at £10, with no guide price and no reserve.
However a spirit of adventure and some luck will certainly help as the huge catch is that it’s in a neighbourhood that was affected by a cliff collapse in December 2023. Significant recovery efforts are underway, including the installation of boreholes to secure the road, but there’s no access at the moment so viewings aren’t possible.
The kitchen is unfinished as the house was being renovated at the time of the landslip, and part of the garden fell away, but it could offer a significant return on investment for a buyer prepared to navigate the hurdles associated with the site.
