TV quiz show Only Connect may be based on a simple formula. But the format of the show — which requires contestants to name the link between the four apparently unrelated clues, revealed one at a time — is designed to be deliberately difficult. Even host Victoria Coren Mitchell has been known to declare the questions "utterly preposterous" and claimed her most hated question of all time was “ungettable”.

Even the title of the quiz is highbrow, stemming from a quotation from E.M. Forster’s novel Howards End: "Only connect the prose and the passion, and both will be exalted." It launched on BBC Four in 2008 before moving to BBC Two in 2014, where it is often broadcast between Mastermind and University Challenge.

Contestants are not your regular gameshow chancers, hoping their general knowledge will scrape them through enough multiple choice questions to win themselves a holiday. Instead they are mostly highly-educated super-geeks, often reflected in their quirky team names.

Perhaps it is their specialist knowledge that can mean contestants have been known to be baffled by the simplest of questions, leaving viewers screaming at their television sets. But even the Only Connect quiz-setters have been known to get things wrong sometimes. Although host Coren Mitchell refuses to apologise, insisting flaws are part of life.

We’ve gathered together ten of the show’s most famously “fiendish” questions. Can you see the connection?

Only Connect is available on BBC iPlayer.
