Border Collie’s Confusion Over Statues of People Is Cracking Everyone Up

For the most part, dogs love to go on walks and make new friends along the way. Winter is a Border Collie who recently met some new people, but she couldn't figure out why they didn't acknowledge her. Her confusion is the cutest thing you'll see today!

Winter and her mom were out on a walk when they approached some human-looking statues. The statues are much bigger than a normal human and don't have faces, but when looking at them, you know they're supposed to be people. Winter runs back and forth between the statures, trying to catch their attention. Make sure your sound is on so you can hear her mom's reaction to the silly pup!

I love what Winter's mom wrote about the pooch's reaction, "If not people, why people shaped? -Winter, probably". The video totally made my day and Winter's mom's laugh made me smile. I really liked what commenter @Domskie's had to say, "Oh that's the cutest and most wholesome thing I've ever seen!" I couldn't agree more! @Gibson Mitchell pointed out, "The absolute crazy in Winter's eyes just wanting to be patted!" and Winter's mom replied, "She was DESPERATE!" @Noodles shared this cute bit, "My friend’s Border Collie drops his ball at the feet of the horses thinking they will throw it for him to catch!"

Dogs' Noses Know

This video reminds me of the Cocker Spaniel who also thought that a statue was human and tried to play. And this poor Golden Retriever impatiently waited for a statue to throw him a ball. These videos just prove how innocent and naive our fur babies are.

I was curious if these dogs tried to smell the statues. I know that dogs learn a lot about us human through their sense of smell, and if Winter smelled the statues would she figure out that they weren't real humans?

Newsweek also wrote an article about this video, and they weighed in with, "While Winter may have not been able to recognize the statues as inanimate objects, canines are more than capable of recognizing their favorite humans through their sense of smell, which is "a principle sensory modality for dogs," said a January 2020 study published in the International Journal of Comparative Psychology." This explains why our dogs love to steal our socks and clothing - it smells just like us and brings them comfort.

We all know that dogs' sense of smell is much stronger than ours; depending on the breed, it could be 10,000 to 100,000 times stronger! Other parts of their bodies also work with their nose to understand scents. Did you know that dogs have a bump on the roof of their mouth that helps them analyze odors? This bump is called the "incisive papilla", and it communicates with the dog's vomeronasal organ which is responsible for detecting pheromones. The patterns on their noses are as unique as human fingerprints, too. They use their noses for everything, even if they don't always get it right.
