Jeff Brazier has told how Celebrity Race Across The World allowed his younger son Freddy to step out of brother Bobby's shadow and make his own way in the world.

The father and son have been competing in the BBC travel contest which airs its final on Wednesday, and viewers have loved seeing their bond deepen as Freddy gains in confidence.

Proud dad Jeff told Loose Women that Freddy had struggled with wanting to find a different path from his TV star brother, but thought that the series had been the making of him.

Jeff Brazier couldn't be prouder of his sons Freddy and Bobby, but has said it was Celebrity Race Across The World that finally allowed his younger son to find his own path away from Bobby's TV star career.

Bobby features in EastEnders and also reached the final of last year's Strictly Come Dancing, as well as having success in modelling. But Freddy has mostly stayed out of the spotlight until he joined the BBC travel contest with his dad, and Jeff said that it had been a conscious choice by his younger son.

He told Loose Women: "He's always looked at his older brother who's had a degree of success and he's always, all his life tried to avoid what Bobby does. So Bobby plays football, let's avoid that. That was his mindset up until the point I said there's an opportunity, let's watch some more of the show. We got really into it and he was like we've got to go and do this."

In a moving clip ahead of this week's final, Jeff was shown telling Freddy: "You have an incredible nature that is instantly forgiving, wonderfully carefree. I often describe you as a better person than me."

Jeff added to the Loose Women panel: "He is a better person than me," but disagreed as they told him he should take credit for his two sons who he brought up alone after their mother Jade Goody died when they were just four and five.

He said: "I can't take that. We're a menu, we're ourselves and we hope our kids take our better sides and leave the stuff that's less desirable. Kids should take a lot of credit for what they end up as. That's a lot of his mum, that's a lot of himself and his own free will.

"You can see how insightful he is, you can see the emotional intelligence. It's all going to come together at some point."

Jeff added: "The biggest benefit to doing Race is (Freddy) watching it back because he has to acknowledge what everyone's always told him about his wonderful characteristics. Kindness and having a big heart and being warm and having empathy is not what you want to be when you're 18 or 19... But he had no choice but to acknowledge that side.

Although Jeff has lots of warm memories of the show, he admitted it was difficult to have to parent Freddy on camera at times.

Talking about one of their disagreements, he said: "It was uncomfortable for me, there's a particular moment where he dips into the budget to buy a few presents and it's generosity ultimately but I was forced to do a bit of parenting and I felt really unsure about that.

"I don't mind it, I think so many families out there resonated with the fact that while your kids might be a bit older there's always more to do."

Loose Women airs on ITV1 at 12.30pm on weekdays.
