It may feel like an age since you bought a pint and thought 'that was cheap', but that could change over the next weeks as pubs across the UK prepare to sell beer for just £2.

At more than 700 Greene King pubs nationwide, certain pints will be available for just £2 between 4 and 18 September. The offer comes at a time when the price of a pint continues to edge upwards with the average now being £4.80, with some venues in the south of England approaching £10.

Pubs have been hit hard by the inflation and cost of living crisis in recent years, pushing up the price of an average pint considerably. Most venues make just pennies per pint, with more than a pound from the cost of each drink going to the government.

In London, it is even more extreme, with many venues charging £8-£9 a drink in the centre. Out of all of the Greene King pubs taking part in the £2 promotion, none of them are in London.

For savvy punters who still want to get a cheap pint, there are numerous ways to find out which pubs offer the lowest prices.

Apps like MisterGoodBeer and CAMRA Good Beer Guide, both provide you with interactive maps that show you where the cheapest pints are available.

CAMRA collects data from almost 40,000 premises and is updated by its members allowing people to see what pints are on offer where and for how much, as well as offering some notes on each pub.

If you want to drink the cheapest pints regularly then it may be worth moving around the country. According to the Office for National Statistics, using 2023 data, Coventry sells the cheapest pint at £3.45. Newcastle is in second at £3.67 and Aberdeen is third at £3.89.

Although you may think these prices are cheap if you go back to just 2019 the average price of a pint was £3.73.

The most expensive pint, unsurprisingly, is in London at £6.10.

Although Greene King is the company offering the £2 deal this month, on 12 September only JD Weatherspoon is also getting in on the action. This time as part of a protest they will reduce the price of their food and drink by 7.5%

They are doing this because all food and drink on sale in pubs is subject to VAT, but supermarkets pay none of the tax on the same product.

How to claim a £2 pint this month

The £2 pints are on offer at selected Greene King pubs and include beers like Amstel, Carlsberg, Fosters, Carling and Tennent’s.

You don't need to do anything special to buy the pints, just ask the bartender which beers they are including in the offer because each pub may have different promotions.

Some 702 pubs are taking part, but Greene King operates over 3,100 venues, so make sure you check if your local is taking part before you go expecting a deal.

The offer ends on 18 September.

Olivia Robertson, Head of Marketing, for Greene King pubs, said: “While we can’t guarantee that the Great British weather will get any better, we can guarantee good times ahead with our £2 Pint offer to toast the season and give reason for friends and family to gather socially before the end of summer at any one of our 700+ pubs nationwide."
