Confused French Bulldog Training to 'Check on the Baby' Doesn't Understand What's in the Crib

There's an endless number of reasons why pet parents say that their dog was their family's missing piece, but it can be even more magical to watch your dog grow into the role of big sibling. Whether you add two tiny feet or four furry paws to the family, your pup will be adjusting and learning right along with you.

Just ask Lauren Michelle's French Bulldog! The sweet pup had been practicing to 'check on the baby' for months until he mastered it, but everything changed when there was finally a baby in the crib. Undoubtedly, Mom and Dad are over the moon, but the brand-new big brother doesn't know what to think about his new sis!

On August 29, new mom Lauren posted a hilarious video of the Frenchie's reaction to the newborn, and it simply can't be missed!

LOL! Discovering you're not the baby anymore is a rude awakening, but this little dog is taking it surprisingly well! He definitely didn't notice that something was changing during his mom's pregnancy like some dogs do, but he definitely understands now. Poor guy! Hopefully, Mom and Dad aren't too exhausted to spoil him with belly rubs and dog treats, just like he deserves.

There's no doubt that this French Bulldog has earned every treat in the box by learning how to 'check on the baby.' He essentially learned a variation of a common command called 'place,' where a dog practices going to and staying at a home base in the room, like a crate, dog bed, or cribside stool.

As one commenter pointed out, this does so much more than give him a closer look at the baby. She wrote, "This is actually smart. If the dog is a Velcro dog, he knows where to go to avoid being a tripping hazard." Exactly! Everyone stays safer this way, and the adorableness is only a bonus.

Helping Your Dog Adjust to a New Baby

New parents aren't the only ones adjusting to life with a newborn baby. There are lots of new sights, sounds, and smells for your pup to take in once their sibling comes home, but you can make this adjustment easier by taking a few extra steps.

Before your baby is born, try listening to crying sounds out loud for your dog to get used to. This way, the real thing will be less distressing. You can also bring your baby's hospital clothes home for your pup to sniff before they meet face-to-face, or you can take a note from Lauren's book and help your dog get comfy in the nursery. There are so many ways you can do this!
