Carol Vorderman managed to escape being sent home from Cooking with the Stars in the very first episode by making Black Forest gateau.

TV presenter Vorderman landed herself in the very first cook-off of the new series, along with YouTube personality Harry Pinero. The pair had 55 minutes to follow the same recipe and make retro dinner party classic Black Forest gateau.

The ITV culinary show presented by Emma Willis and Tom Allen returned for its fourth series with Vorderman, Pinero, Abbey Clancy and Pasha Kovalev the first celebrity contestants to be put to the test in the kitchen. Clancy compared Vorderman's over-cooked jam to "Halloween blood".

Former Countdown star Vorderman, 63, faced model and podcast presenter Clancy, 38, in the first round, while Pinero, 33, faced former Strictly Come Dancing pro dancer Pasha Kovalev.

Vorderman and Pinero received the lowest number of votes from the panel of professional chefs for the cooking and landed in the cook-off. Pinero began the recipe by admitting he had never baked a cake before.

But Vorderman was more worried about her cherry jam. As she poured it out of the pan she exclaimed: "B***dy hell! That is sticky jam." Watching on Clancy observed: "It looks like Halloween blood."

Vorderman said: "I think I've over-boiled it." As she plated up her restaurant-style dessert gateau she said: "Absolute failure! They just haven't set." Pinero said: "No chance, its not happening. We did our best."

Both contestants received positive feedback for effort, despite the messy appearance of the dishes. But Pinero received the least votes and was sent home. Vorderman goes through to cook in another round.

Vorderman said of going through to the next round: "It is exhausting, I can tell you that! But thank you."

Model Clancy, 38, said she was taking part in the show to impress her four children, and not her husband footballer Peter Crouch. Willis said: "I love that you doing this to impress your kids. Not Peter, or anybody else." Clancy said: "No, because he's good. Pete is good, he doesn't complain." The Britain's Next Top Model presenter is mother to 13-year-old daughter Sophia, nine-year-old daughter Liberty and sons Johnny, six and Jack, four.

Vorderman faced Clancy in the first round. Clancy cooked sirloin steak with chimichurri sauce, asparagus and rosemary potatoes. Vorderman prepared salmon coulibiac- which is with mushroom, boiled egg and rice cooked in a pastry parcel - with green beans and a champagne veloute sauce.

Vorderman became the first celebrity of the series to bang her gong for help 25 mins in and asked chef mentor Tony Singh to do her chopping for her. Following judgment by a panel of professional chefs, Clancy won four out of six votes and landed in the cook off.

The second round saw former Strictly Come Dancing pro dancer Pasha Kovalev up against influencer Pinero. Pinero was cooking Crispy duck with strawberry hoisin sauce. Kovalev - who is married to Countdown star Rachel Riley - was preparing spicy cauliflower steak with lentil hummus. Kovalev escaped the cook-off with four votes.
