County board searches for new circuit clerk after Palazzolo steps down

The Sangamon County Board is searching for county circuit clerk candidates after Paul Palazzolo announced his departure earlier this week.

Palazzolo, who has held various roles with the county over a 20-plus year tenure, will be stepping down effective Oct. 1 to serve as executive director of Kiwanis International. He also had an unsuccessful run for mayor of Springfield in 2015.

Sangamon County Board Chair Andy Van Meter will nominate an individual to fill the vacant position, where the board would then decide whether to confirm that appointment. Candidates have to reside in the county and hold the same party affiliation as Palazzolo, a Republican.
