Dog in Texas Who ‘Nobody Wants’ Has Been Waiting for a Family Since 2022

If you're looking to bring home a new dog to add to your family mix, consider adoption. There are so many amazing dogs out there just waiting to find their forever family, many of whom have been waiting for a very long time. Leo has been living at the Fort Worth Abandoned Animal Alliance (FWAAA) since November 2022, when he was rescued from euthanasia at a local animal shelter. He's still waiting to find a family to call his own, and it's time for us to help find it for him.

FWAAA posted a video in mid-September featuring 4-year-old Leo as a dog ready to be adopted. The staff there has gotten to know Leo well and say that he gets along with everybody from dogs to cats, to kids, and basically all humans. He also likes to go and walks and, like many dogs, enjoys snacking on cat food. And Leo LOVES to play!

Leo does have a medical condition - he deals with ongoing effects of Lupus - as well as vitiligo, a skin condition that causes discoloring due to melanin loss. But they don't slow him down. Because FWAAA so badly wants to find a home for Leo, they're asking for anybody interested to consider fostering him.

People left hundreds of comments, and I was glad to see a few who had said that they filled out foster applications. There were others who commented saying that they were just hoping to 'boost' the post (meaning give it a bigger reach so more people could see it) as a way to help find Leo a furever home. I'm hoping that with all of this attention, he finds a home soon!

The Benefits of Adopting a Pet

If you are ready to find your next pet, you should definitely consider adopting one from a local shelter or rescue. While many shelters nowadays are no-kill shelters, not all of them are. If animals aren't fostered or adopted in a certain amount of time, they are often euthanized. Rescues do not euthanize animals, but they're often so overrun with pets looking for homes that they can't take on any more dogs in need. Adopting from a shelter or rescue is good for everybody involved.

A great reason to adopt that many people don't realize is that it's less expensive than purchasing a pet from a breeder or pet store. Shelters and rescues aren't in the business of making money selling animals. Usually, the fees associated with adoption cover spay or neutering, as well as other expenses (think food, medical expenses, etc.) Instead of paying thousands to buy your next pet, you pay just a couple to few hundred, or in some cases, less than that. A few times a year, many shelters have a no fee adoption event, just trying to get their longest residents or those that need it most into good homes.

If adoption isn't an option for your family, consider fostering. Many people enjoy helping out their communities and animals in need by doing so. They open up their homes for a certain period of time to help animals acclimate to being in a home and around people and other animals. If things work out and you fall in love with your foster, adoption is usually an option! It's a win-win all the way around!
