Watch: Emily Maitlis 'horrified and speechless' at Huw Edwards scandal

Emily Maitlis has admitted to being "horrified and speechless" at discovering former BBC colleague Huw Edwards' crimes.

The former Newsnight presenter told Good Morning Britain of her horror at hearing ex BBC News anchor Edwards had admitted to making indecent images of children. He was given a six-month suspended sentence earlier this week.

Maitlis also spoke about Prime Video drama A Very Royal Scandal, the latest adaptation of her bombshell interview with Prince Andrew, and why she thought it was worth revisiting.

Huw Edwards' court case over making indecent images of children, including receiving videos of a child aged between seven and nine being abused, has sent shockwaves through many of his former BBC colleagues.

When ex-Newsnight presenter Emily Maitlis appeared on Good Morning Britain on Wednesday, she shared her horror at the case with another former BBC News employee, Susanna Reid, who now hosts ITV's GMB.

Reid asked: "What are your reflections on Huw today in this huge week?"

Maitlis replied: "I'm horrified, I think we're all horrified. I worked with Huw on elections, I'd say hi to him, he was a colleague who would do the 10 o'clock finish and I'd do Newsnight so he was somebody I'd say hi to."

She was left struggling for words as she added: "I was absolutely...I'm speechless."

LONDON, UNITED KINGDOM SEPTEMBER 16, 2024: Former BBC Presenter Huw Edwards leaves Westminster Magistrates Court following a sentencing hearing in London, United Kingdom on September 16, 2024. Huw Edwards has been sentenced to six months' imprisonment, suspended for two years including a sex offender treatment programme and 25 rehabilitation sessions after pleading guilty earlier this year to three counts of making indecent images of children. Reid said: "It leaves you speechless, doesn't it, that someone you've worked with could be responsible for something like that."

"Yeah, I think it's a real deep breath moment, isn't it?" said Maitlis, as Reid replied: "Isn't it just."

Edwards was given a six-month suspended sentence when he appeared in court on Monday.

Maitlis was in the GMB studio to talk about A Very Royal Scandal, the new Prime Video dramatisation of her bombshell 2019 Newsnight interview with Prince Andrew about his involvement with Jeffrey Epstein.

It lead to Prince Andrew being forced to step back from royal duties and has previously been made into another TV drama, the Netflix film Scoop, earlier this year.

Asked whether she thought it was time to leave the story now after two screen adaptations, Maitlis said: "I don't think it's in our hands what happens next. We made a drama because we wanted to try and put in context everything that had happened. Not just the interview itself. The interview has been watched by 10m people, you can go back and have a look and I hope it will send more people to have a look at the interview itself.

"But actually we felt it was important to put the interview right at the centre of these three hours of television and say this is going to be a story about consequences as well. This is going to be a story about fall out, reverberations and repercussions. That's what we're trying to do here, to take a moment to stand back.

"It's nearly five years. We've got the perspective now that we didn't have when we finished the interview and I think we're learning things about the monarchy, about our own relationship with the monarchy as a result of this. Maybe it was a process that it kickstarted."

Good Morning Britain airs on ITV1 at 6am on weekdays.
