2024 MTV VMAs: Megan Thee Stallion hosts the music celebration, with Chappell Roan, Sabrina Carpenter, Benson Boone set to perform

The MTV VMAs know how to throw a party — and generate a pop culture moment for the world to see.

Since its premiere in 1984, the awards show has been the site of some of the most memorable moments in pop culture history.

In 1999, a then 17-year-old Britney Spears made her VMAs debut with a performance of “...Baby One More Time.” Just a few years later, the pop star sent tabloids into a frenzy when she and Madonna shared an onstage kiss during their 2003 performance together. Kanye West famously interrupted Taylor Swift when she accepted the award for Best Female Video at the 2009 VMAs, sparking a decades-spanning feud. Beyoncé’s onstage pregnancy announcement that topped off her performance of “Love on Top” at the 2011 show broke the internet and set the record for most mentions on X per second.

This year should be no different.

Broadcasting live from the UBS Arena in New York, the 2024 MTV VMAs will celebrate a year of visual spectacles from music’s brightest stars, including Post Malone, Ariana Grande, Billie Eilish and more.

Winners receive the coveted “Moon Person” (formerly “Moonman”) trophy that depicts an astronaut planting a flag with the MTV logo onto the moon. The silver statue has since become a symbol of pop culture excellence.
