Clarkson, Hammond and May teary-eyed in The Grand Tour’s final episode

It's the end of the road for The Grand Tour trio, Jeremy Clarkson, Richard Hammond and James May, who began their incredible career together 22 years ago.

The hosts bid farewell to their fans, and their career, with one last car-revving special: The Grand Tour: One For The Road. While it was a moment to go on another adventure full of fast cars (unless you're Hammond), beautiful sights, and make fun of one another, it also led to a rare moment of reflection for them all.

Clarkson, Hammond and May each appeared moved by the enormity of their time together in the episode, which saw them travel across Zimbabwe and through Botswana.

The Grand Tour's last special led them to the location where they finished their very first special together for Top Gear — Kubu Island, in Botswana. The time it took to get to the location gave them ample reason to look back, and they grew emotional about how far they've come.

During different points in their journey, Clarkson, Hammond and May individually reflected on their two decades together on camera. May even grew teary-eyed at one point, as he spoke of the "small ways" he thinks he'll be reminded of the adventures they've been on.

"22 years, all but a third of my life," May says to his in-car camera on the way to Kubu Island. "This is going to hit me in quite small ways, there's a green bag, I've got a green hold bag that I've used since the very first special in Botswana, I always used it for specials and never taken it anywhere else.

"So what will I do with that green bag? One day I'll come across it in the cupboard where we keep the bags and I'll think 'oh yea', and it'll come back."

May then grew visibly teary-eyed at the thought, and after a moment added: "Anyway, I hope we’ve brought you a little bit of happiness."

Hammond was also moved by the prospect of ending the show while nearing Kubu Island, saying: "I never thought what we do together would go on as it has, I was excited when I got the job way back, very excited.

"But I never dreamed it would grow into a career and life-defining adventure, and occasionally nearly a career and life-ending adventure. I can't pretend it isn't going to be a wrench, ending this, because it is."

Earlier in the episode, when the trio transported their cars across Zimbabwe's Lake Kariba Hammond also grew sombre when he told the camera: "It's going to be a long night, not our first — ordinarily I'd say not our last, but it is." He then quickly told himself to "stop saying those things."

Clarkson was the most succinct in his reflection of their time together, though equally as moved by it. During their trip across Lake Kariba he simply said: "What a job this has been. What a career."

The special has many stand-out moments, from the trio tinkering with their cars so that they could be driven across railway tracks, to accidentally smuggling huge amounts of silver into Botswana after they made accessories for their cars with the precious metal.

Fans were equally as emotional about the show ending, though, and shared their thoughts on saying goodbye to Clarkson, Hammond and May on social media, namely X.

One person wrote of the special: "If I don't watch it then it can never end, right?"

Another viewer shared a still from Black Panther in which Chadwick Boseman's T'Challa says he's "not ready to be without you", adding: "Booting up #TheGrandTour knowing this is the last time I’ll see the boys together."

While one person reflected: "Not sure I’m ready to watch the last @thegrandtour…from childhood to adulthood these 3 men have entertained and created a generation of petrolheads, just not ready to say goodbye…"

And another viewer wrote: "What an epic journey you guys had. It was a pleasure to tag along during all these years."

The Grand Tour: One For the Road is out now on Prime Video.
