Ludwig has delighted BBC viewers so much that just one day after it premiered viewers were already calling for a new series.

The crime drama stars David Mitchell as John 'Ludwig' Taylor, a reclusive puzzle designer who decides to take on his twin brother James' identity in order to investigate his mysterious disappearance. In the fish out of water story, John must pretend to be a DCI on Cambridge's major crimes squad so he helps solve crimes whilst searching for his brother.

Mitchell is joined in the series by Anna Maxwell Martin, Dipo Ola, Izuka Hoyle, and Dorothy Atkinson, amongst others, and the series was dropped all on BBC iPlayer so that viewers could choose whether they wanted to binge it straight away or watch it weekly — many chose the former.

Some people who watched Ludwig shared their thoughts on the series on social media, with several asking BBC to recommission the show already.

One user tagged BBC and Mitchell on X and said: "#LUDWIG - I LOVED IT. Second series?", while another wrote: "Dear @BBCOne PLEASE can we have a second series of #Ludwig!!!!"

They weren't the only ones hoping to see more of Ludwig on their screens, as another person wrote: "Stuff like this makes me happy to pay my tv licence, more of this BBC! Commission a second series - and I’m only one episode in!"

Viewers were also full of praise for the series, with one saying: "Absolutely loved the first episode of #Ludwig. Right up my street!"

The cosy crime drama delighted another viewer, who said it was "the Jonathan Creek for a new generation", adding: "It's all about formula and logic. It's so simple and absolutely brilliant. Love it!"

Another person put things simply: "#Ludwig is the best binge of the year so far. Isn’t it obvious."

Mitchell's performance as the titular character also worked well for fans, with one person saying the actor is "brilliant" in the series, while a different viewer wrote: "Just watched the first three episodes of #Ludwig and it's brilliant. Right up my street. Some good laughs combined with an utterly ridiculous set of circumstances and characters make this an easy watch. Loving the incidental Beethoven variations too. Mitchell is brilliant."

Mitchell would no doubt be delighted by the praise as he shared that Ludwig was a dream role: "I love TV detective shows. It’s one of the types of programme I find most enjoyable and comforting to watch. I grew up loving Miss Marple and Inspector Morse and Poirot so it’s a bit of a dream for me to be in one."

The comedian added that Ludwig works well as a series because of its episodic nature, adding: "I like the fact that you get some sort of resolution with Ludwig in one sitting. A lot more television programmes these days are serials. You have to keep watching to kind of get anything.

"In Ludwig there are rewards for keeping watching every week but equally there is a story in each episode that is resolved, hopefully in a pleasing and intriguing way."

Ludwig continues to air on BBC One every Wednesday at 9pm, and all episodes are available on BBC iPlayer now.
