Another Argentine is on his way to Inter Miami.

Defender Tomás Avilés signed with the club Tuesday evening on a contract that runs through the 2026 Major League Soccer season. The 19 year old joins as part of the MLS’ U-22 initiative.

Avilés’ contract includes options for the 2027 and 2028 seasons and he will take up an international roster slot.

Avilés made his professional debut just seven months ago for Argentine side Racing Club. He’s appeared in 20 matches and picked up one assist. Avilés has also split national team duties between Argentina and Chile, making five combined starts between the two countries.

Of course, he joins superstar Lionel Messi as a new Argentine with Miami, but also midfielder Facundo Farías, a 20 year old who signed with Inter Miami on Saturday.

“This is an exciting opportunity for me and I can’t wait to represent Inter Miami,” Avilés said in a statement. “I will give everything for this club and do what I can to help us meet our objectives.”

Farías, like Avilés, occupies an international roster slot, one of which was gained last week in a trade with the San Jose Earthquakes.

Inter Miami coach Gerardo “Tata” Martino, also an Argentine, hinted that the signing was in its final stages earlier in the day during Jordi Alba’s introductory press conference.

Avilés and Farías are Inter Miami’s final U-22 signings. Paraguayan midfielder Diego Gómez was the first one, an addition made on July 19.

The U-22 program was enacted two years ago and allows each MLS club to sign up to three players at the age of 22 or younger. It’s encouraging for teams because a player occupying that slot has a reduced charge against the club’s budget and can have that designation until they turn 25. A player aged 20 or younger hits the cap at $150,000, while a player aged 21-25 hits the cap at $200,000.
