99 To Beat, a brand new game show that has prompted comparisons with Netflix hit Squid Game, will soon become ITV’s new must-watch series — but it’s already causing headlines online.

The show — which has proved popular in places like Norway, Poland, the Netherlands and Germany — features 100 players battling it out for a big cash prize. However, it’s experienced a few teething problems whilst making its way to UK TV.

According to a report from The Sun, three of its hopefuls were rushed to hospital after a challenge involving a short drop into a 20ft haystack. While no one was seriously injured, it has shone a light on the series, with many viewers eager to see what ITV is cooking up.

With that in mind, here’s everything we know so far about 99 To Beat, including its release date, format and more.

99 To Beat doesn’t have a release date yet. It’s currently filming in the UK which means we might be able to see it land on ITV in late 2024 or early 2025.

The format of 99 To Beat is simple enough.

100 contestants are invited to take place in a number of different games – some simple, some trickier to navigate. The only rule? Don’t come last. After 100 players are whittled down to just one, the last person standing will walk away with a life-changing cash prize.

If this reminds you a little of Squid Game, you’re not alone. According to its producers, the show’s tasks will be very similar in tone – albeit, without all the blood, death and disaster.

According to reports, 99 To Beat’s tasks could be as varied as “trying to find a dummy hidden in a vat of jelly or putting on a frozen t-shirt” — the only goal is to not to come last.

It's these challenge-based moments that resulted in the show’s recent headline-grabbing news, when three players were rushed to hospital after a task that saw them fall onto a pile of hay.

“A small number of contestants received medical attention after having an adverse reaction to hay, while participating in a game to retrieve chopsticks from a large haystack,” said a spokesman for the production company behind 99 To Beat.

“Filming was temporarily suspended and is due to resume later this week. Contributor welfare remains our top priority, and our established robust health and safety processes are regularly reviewed and assessed.”

With the incident behind them and no one badly injured, production on the show has resumed with an eye to release on ITV at a later date.

The pair will be familiar to many thanks to their appearances in the country’s top soap operas, with Adam playing Adam Barton on Emmerdale and Ryan known for his turn as Jason Grimshaw on Coronation Street.

Elsewhere, Adam has appeared on shows like I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out of Here! and Strictly Come Dancing, while Rylan won 2018’s edition of Celebrity Big Brother on Channel 5. 99 To Beat will be their first job as co-presenters.

“It’s new, it’s fresh, it’s fun and we can’t wait for people to see it,” said the duo in a shared statement commenting on their new job.

“It really is the ultimate family show, and so we couldn’t be more excited to be hosting it together, as a family. It’s a dream come true for us. We can already imagine people at home playing these games with their families as it’s fun/silly/competitive & heartfelt.”

99 To Beat is coming soon to ITV and ITVX.
