Morgan Rees, the former editor of Men’s Health magazine, has been appointed editor-in-chief of British film magazine Empire.

Rees replaces Mark Dinning who left after eight years heading the title to become editor of Time Out Dubai.

“It’s incredible to be working on a brand that I’ve followed – with a good degree of jealousy – for so many years,” said Rees. “The team are exceptional and I’m looking forward to working with them in pushing the title into new areas of growth and development. I’m trying to figure out the new ‘Darth Vader breathing’ cover as we speak.“

Until 2011, Rees held the role of editorial director at Hearst-Rodale, overseeing the editorial strategy of Men’s Health, Runner’s World and Triathlete’s World. Prior to that he had been editor of Men’s Health.

He has most recently been running an editorial agency and consultancy.

“As the hugely successful former editor of Men’s Health and creative development director and editorial director of Hearst-Rodale he brings with him an impressive knowledge of the magazine and digital publishing business and a deep understanding of the men’s magazine market,” said Abby Carvosso, managing director of Empire publisher Bauer Media’s London Lifestyle business. “He is the perfect person to take the Empire brand to the next level.“
