Man, 44, killed on southbound I-95 while changing flat tire near Linton Blvd. in Delray

DELRAY BEACH — A 44-year-old Palm Springs man died Tuesday morning on southbound Interstate 95 when a vehicle veered onto the highway's shoulder and struck him while he was changing a flat tire, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

FHP did not release the name of the man who died or the driver of the vehicle that struck him, a 53-year-old West Palm Beach man. It was not immediately clear if the 53-year-old man would face any charges in the wreck.

Investigators said the man who died was in the truck that pulled onto the shoulder shortly before 6:20 a.m. near the Linton Boulevard exit. It was not immediately not clear why the driver of a gray 2015 Chevrolet two-door Camaro strayed onto the shoulder and struck him.

The driver of the Camaro also hit the pickup, the guardrail and then a third vehicle — a 2006 Chevrolet Trailblazer SUV that was disabled for unknown reasons on the side of the road.

Delray Beach Fire Rescue pronounced the Palm Springs man dead at the scene. A 40-year-old man from Lake Worth Beach who had been driving the truck with the flat tire was not injured, FHP said.

An ambulance crew took the driver of the Camaro to Delray Medical Center with non-incapacitating injuries, according to FHP's crash report.

The wreck shut down the southbound lanes of the interstate for most of the morning, before opening three lanes at about 10 a.m. and all lanes an hour later.

The investigation is ongoing.
