Phillip Schofield is back on prime time television for the first time in over a year in Channel 5's survival series Cast Away. Having come out as gay in February 2020 after nearly 27 years of marriage to wife Stephanie, the TV stalwart — who has been on UK television since the mid-1980s — stepped down as the host of This Morning on 20 May, 2023 after admitting to an “unwise but not illegal” affair with a much younger male colleague. He was later dropped as the host of the British Soap Awards and Dancing On Ice, retiring from the public eye.

After resigning from ITV over the incident, the broadcaster announced that its policy on work relationships has been updated in the wake of furore. Then, in December, a barrister who conducted an investigation into Schofield's conduct asserted that ITV made "considerable efforts" to find out the truth about an alleged affair between Schofield and a runner in 2019 but was "unable to uncover the relevant evidence" until the presenter’s own admission in late May 2023. The former presenter "reluctantly declined" to take part in the investigation because of "the risk to his health".

Now, after months of being out of the spotlight — bar a couple of confessional interviews and a trip to the Grand Prix — the 62-year-old presenter is back in the limelight in the Channel 5 show that maroons a celebrity for ten days and nine nights on a remote, unpopulated island off the coast of Madagascar, with only a video camera, and the bare essentials to survive.

Schofield claims his return to TV isn't about trying to rebuild his media career, saying "this is me having my say as I bow out", adding that things would have been different for him had he been involved in a heterosexual affair, but should the presenter be back on TV at all?

Some think his relationship with a younger colleague represents an abuse of power, while others think it's time to forgive and forget and let him "bow out" on his own terms. But what do you think? Let us know in the two polls below.

Come back on Friday to read the results and analysis.
