If there's one thing guaranteed at Christmastime on the BBC it's a new episode of the channel's fan favourites, of which Death in Paradise is one.

The BBC detective drama has long held the tradition of releasing a special to mark the end of the current season and the start of a new one. 2024's special will be one to remember, because it will introduce viewers to a new detective in Saint Marie after the departure of Ralf Little's DI Neville Parker.

With such excitement afoot, viewers will no doubt be wondering what they can expect from the BBC show upon its return. Here is everything that we know so far.

As mentioned, Saint Marie is set to welcome a new detective this festive season and he will be played by Don Gilet. The EastEnders alum will be taking on the role of DI Mervin Wilson in the series after portraying an entirely different character on the show previously.

The actor will be joined by series regulars Don Warrington, Shantol Jackson, Ginny Holder, Élizabeth Bourgine and Danny John-Jules who will continue playing Commissioner Selwyn Patterson, DS Naomi Thomas, Officer Darlene Curtis, Catherine Bordey, and Officer Dwayne Myers, respectively.

The BBC has not yet confirmed which guest stars will be appearing in the special alongside Gilet and his fellow regulars, but there are likely to be a few famous faces in the episode.

The BBC has not yet confirmed when the Death in Paradise 2024 Christmas special will air, however in previous years the show's festive episode has landed on BBC One on Boxing Day. This has been the case since the show's eleventh season so it is likely to be the same for season 14's Christmas episode.

An official release date and time for the special will be announced in due course.

The Christmas special will introduce DI Mervin Wilson to the team in Saint Marie, and the detective is said to have been transferred to the idyllic island from London.

While the circumstances around his arrival on the show have not yet been revealed, the BBC has confirmed that the character is not "overly pleased" by the prospect of his new position. Could this lead to some tension between the team? It may well do so.

As of right now there is no trailer for the Christmas special, but this will likely be released closer to the episode's release. So fans can either expect a trailer to come out in November or December.

Death in Paradise returns with a 2024 festive special at Christmas on BBC One, and season 14 will be released in 2025.
