After making American Horror Story one of the most successful anthology series of recent years, Murphy headed to Netflix with his AHS regular Evan Peters for a new tale of terror.

Swapping fiction for real life, he followed one of America’s most notorious serial killers and in doing so created one of Netflix’s most popular shows, with Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story wracking up a billion hours of playback from Netflix viewers in its first 60 days.

As a result, Murphy was swiftly hired to deliver two new projects, each based on sinister real-life stories — the first of which, Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story — is due imminently.

Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez story is based on the real-life crimes committed by its eponymous stars, two brothers who murdered their parents, José and Kitty Menendez, in 1989.

After their arrest, the brothers claimed their murderous acts were the result of years of domestic, verbal and sexual abuse by their parents. However, once in court, the prosecution argued that they were instead motivated by the idea of inheriting their family’s vast fortune.

As detailed in the show’s trailer, Murphy aims to chronicle the events leading up to Lyle and Erik committing this bloody crime before following their time in court and the media attention the case attracted.

The show is being billed as the second season of Murphy’s Monster anthology show, following 2022’s Dahmer — Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story.
