Football: Chaos reigns in Week 5 as 10 top-five teams fall on Friday night

Let's take a quick Survey after Week 5.

A. I feel more confident about who the favorites are in each classification.

B. I feel less confident about who the favorites are in each classification.

C. What the heck happened on Friday night?!?

It’s totally acceptable to pick option C. You certainly wouldn’t be alone.

Just consider the following results from Friday’s games.

Class 4S: Mandarin (No. 2) lost to Creekside 23-22 on a last-minute touchdown pass by Sean Ashenfelder; Seminole (No. 3) fell behind 12-0 in the first five minutes before pounding Vero Beach 45-20; Apopka (No. 4, 2022 state runner-up) gave up four first half touchdowns in a 27-0 loss to Edgewater

Class 1S: Trinity Catholic (No. 1) lost to Raines 27-26; First Baptist (No. 2) was outscored 14-0 in the second half and lost to True North Classical

Are all of these bad results for the losing teams? Absolutely not. Some of these results feature some outstanding teams on the winning side. Some of these were just great games. Some of the losing teams were without key players on Friday night.

At the end of day, maybe we shouldn’t make too much of a Week 5 result. It’s not even October yet and we still have more than half the season to go.

But it’s yet another week that singles a major shakeup in the upcoming rankings. As we said after Week 1, maybe we should just embrace the chaos.
