Galadriel and Sauron's story is 'far from over' in The Rings of Power

Watch: Charlie Vickers and The Rings of Power showrunners on Galadriel and Sauron's relationship

When The Rings of Power premiered its first season something unexpected happened, fans began to connect with the relationship between Galadriel (Morfydd Clark) and Halbrand (Charlie Vickers) — even more so when Halbrand was revealed to really be Sauron.

JRR Tolkien's The Lord of the Rings may not have set the stage for a romance between the characters, but that hasn't stopped fans of Prime Video's TV series from being inspired by the relationship, which actor Vickers tells Yahoo UK was a lovely surprise. Season 2 finds the pair separated after Sauron's identity was revealed but with the Elven rings now forged, and the villain's emergence set into motion, there's more to come between them, according to the actor.

"I think it is surprising, I found it surprising because I don't think we really were that conscious of it when we were filming it," Vickers says of fans who love the Galadriel and Sauron pairing. "But it's great, I think it's a cool byproduct of the show — If that's a story that came from the first season, it's only a positive thing, I think.

"Their relationship going forward is one of... it's no longer a proximity, right, they're not together, but they are always connected throughout the the ether.

"And I think that will endure as long as the show endures, because they represent good and evil, right? They haven't fought their last battle yet."

Showrunners JD Payne and Patrick McKay also reflected on the enduring bond between the two characters, with McKay sharing with Yahoo UK that they didn't believe it would be a thing when one of the show's creative team pointed it out as a possibility.

"Gennifer Hutchison, an executive producer in the first two seasons, [and] writer on the show, she said 'everyone's gonna ship these two!'" McKay reveals. "We're like, 'that's crazy. They're enemies. What? What are you talking about?' So, Genny, you were right."

Payne adds: "I think whenever you have two talented, thematic people like this in scenes together it's very natural [that] people [are] gonna pick up on the chemistry that they have between them. It's just part of the nature of their drama, and so it's not so surprising."

"Sauron is a cause of real shame for Galadriel," the showrunner goes on to say of season 2. "This is someone who is so certain all the time that what she's doing is right, and she unwittingly empowered the Dark Lord in her activities in season 1.

"So because of that she is on her back foot a little bit this season, she's alienated her friends, she's lost her confidence and she has a lot of reparation to do. So this season is going to see her sort of wrestling with how she could have been so certain and yet been so wrong.

"And at the same time Sauron is more dogged than ever in his quest to make rings and also his desire to get the Elven rings. So that's what puts him on a collision course with Galadriel. So their story is far from over."

The first three episodes of The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power premieres on Thursday, 29 August on Prime Video, and episodes will air weekly thereafter.
