Giant Maine Coon Cat's Determination to Use Ice Machine Gets an 'A' for Effort

Favorite pets and breeds of that pet grow and wane in popularity due to a variety of factors. A movie heavily featuring that kind of dog or pet, or a celebrity owner, can sometimes catapult a particular type of pet into fame (or infamy). Remember Paris Hilton and the Chihuahua? Luke Perry and the pot-bellied pig? The Obamas and their Portuguese Water Dog?

It’s harder to pinpoint the reasons that people these days are going wild for Maine Coons. It seems odd that it was the 2019 remake of famous horror property Pet Seminary ignited a thirst for the breed. Rather, I bet it’s something to do with their popularity on pet-focused social media channels. The giant breed of cat is certainly striking on TikTok, and their antics on Instagram and similar sites have millions enthralled. Take this recent viral video of a giant Maine Coon working his refrigerator’s ice machine all by himself.

Or, at least, trying to.

In this video, a large Maine Coon named Jax has put together how the ice machine dispenser built into the fridge works. Well, almost. He knows if he presses the lever on the dispenser, ice will come out. He just hasn’t figured out how long to hold it in for.

I’m sure he’ll get there soon, and then look out, world!

“I swear Maine Coons are humans in cat bodies,” says one person in comments, and she sounds like she knows. Others chime in to say their Maine Coons are obsessed with ice too, and one has even worked out how to break into the countertop ice maker!

Guess you can take the breed out of Maine, but they still love the cold.

When Pets Learn How Things Work

Pets may not be as intelligent as we are, but that doesn’t make them dummies. For instance, your cat knows that you have the ability to open doors, cans, and the tap on the sink. And if they watch you carefully enough, maybe they can figure it out too. They are keen observers with a predator’s intellect. (Well, okay, some of them are dummies.)

Everyone remembers that scene in Jurassic Park where the velociraptors figure out how to open the door. Many cat owners have gone through a similar scenario watching their cats figure out how to break into kitchen cabinets or even refrigerators. Some cats have figured out water taps or—and I’m speaking from personal experience here—the bidet controls on a toilet lid. (It wouldn’t be a problem as long as they also figured out how to turn it off.)

Is a Maine Coon Right For You?

The breed of cat known as Maine Coons are growing in popularity due to their enormous size and supposedly winning personalities. They keep growing over a far longer period of time than regular domestic short hair varieties of cats. Some do not even reach their full size until they are four years old.

The cat here is obviously big enough to reach the ice dispenser by standing on its hind legs.

Maybe it’s mo’ cat, mo’ problems?
