One of the downsides of having a larger dog is it can limit your travel options. Most airlines prohibit animals other than service animals too large to fit in under seat carriers on flights, and not every pet is a good candidate for air travel anyway. This woman has a Golden Retriever puppy who is, luckily, still small enough to put in a carrier that go go under her seat. And she’s definitely taking advantage of it while she still can.

In this video, a woman brings home her new Golden Retriever puppy in style—on a plane, in first class, and secreted away in a luxurious, expandable pet carrier designed to give him a little extra leg room. People are astonished to see this butterball of fluff riding in a plane cabin and need to know how this woman accomplished it.

Luckily, she’s happy to share. Taking your pet on a plane is not exactly rocket science—it’s a mix of knowing the policy, paying the fees, and being flexible.

Michelle, a luxury travel influencer, is not knew to the cent of bringing her Golden Retrievers on planes when they are still puppies. Her newest puppy, Camper, looks to be only two or three months old, as he’s still got that role poly baby “butterball” look Golden Retriever puppies are known for. And, while he’s still small, Michelle is going to take advantage of the fact that he can still come with her in the cabin.

And what a carrier! The zip-able case is from Amazon, and apparently has expandable side pockets that give the dog a little extra room under the seat once she has him situated.

Airline Policies on Pets

Most airlines allow pets who can fit in under seat carriers to fly in the cabin with you for an extra fee, but policies and prices vary by airlines, so definitely look into it before booking.

To make things easier on both of them, she booked them a first class ticket, which gave them extra leg room and space. She says hat for this ticket it was an extra two hundred dollars to upgrade, on top of the one hundred and fifty dollar pet fee. Certainly not cheap, but she felt it was worth it for having peace of mind about her pup’s well-being while they traveled.

Following the Rules

What people were probably most impressed by are the few shots in the video of Michelle cuddling Camper the Golden Retriever like a baby, holding her on her lap by the window and very much not in the carrier at her feet.

But it’s important to remember that an influencer’s video content is not exactly reflective of real life. Michelle admits she only took Camper out of his regulated carrier for a few minutes during the flight to give him a drink of water, and that only after making sure there were no working dogs on the flight who might get distracted if she did. Despite the adorable clips of her snuggling her puppy in the airplane seat, this was not indicative of how she spent most of her journey, nor was it officially sanctioned by the airline.

“Some flight attendants may not even allow those few minutes and that’s okay,” she clarifies. “If they stick to policy, you must follow their instructions.”

In the comments, actual flight attendants thank her for making sure her viewers know what the rules are.

“As a flight attendant thank you so much for emphasizing the policies!” said one.

“Thank you for highlighting how important it is to follow the rules, both for the sake of working dogs and for airlines to keep allowing dogs in cabin!” said another.
