Golden Retriever Totally Dunks Corgi Sister During Swimming Pool Session

For Maui the Golden Retriever, it’s been one cool summer. He especially likes pool time with his doggy best friend, Ruby. Though the diminutive Corgi Ruby is a bit more nervous in the water, Maui is determined to keep her safe—that is, until his favorite toy is thrown across the pool. Then all bets re off, and Maui actually leaps on top of Ruby while she’s swimming, sending the furry little loaf bobbing under the waves.

Don’t worry—no dogs were harmed in the making of this hilarious video.

“Don’t worry,” reads the caption on this amusing slip of the dunking incident, “Ruby comes back stronger than ever.” Still, watching her stubby little legs fly up straight in the air after the Golden Retriever literally jumps over her and lands on her little head can’t help but give you a chuckle for the day.

Apparently, policing dogs at the pool is not entirely unlike policing kids who are roughhousing during a game of Marco Polo.

But lest anyone think that Maui went too hard on the little Corgi, never fear. The smaller dogs are a lot tougher—and a lot better at swimming—than many give them credit for.

Corgis Through History

Corgis are the casual term for the breed known as the Pembroke Welsh Corgi, a small but very popular and recognizable breed of herding dogs. Their name is derived from a Welsh word for “dwarf”, and their short stature came in handy for the traditional job as a “heeler”—a small dog that would run between the legs of cows and other herding animals and nip at their heels to direct them.

These days, Corgis are best known for being the favorite dog breed of Queen Elizabeth II of England and her family, who kept many of them in Buckingham Palace. Their royal status as well as their compact size and friendly nature have made them an extremely popular breed of dog, and most people can recognize them on sight. They considered highly agreeable and affectionate dogs, who are good for families and easy to train.

Their appearances make them look especially friendly, with their large, upright ears, smiling snout. But don’t be fooled—like most herding dogs, they are strong and love vigorous exercise, including swimming. And though you may think those stubby legs are not suited for water sports, they also have thick water-resistant coats, and many enjoy swimming a great deal.

But perhaps not as much as a Golden Retriever.

Golden Retrievers at Play

Golden Retrievers are known for being friendly and affectionate, and it’s no secret that they love the water. Bred to be waterfowl hunting dogs, Golden Retrievers are excellent swimmers, and can’t get enough of horsing around by the pool—even if it means dunking on the smaller dogs in the vicinity.

Remember, before you let your dog loose in the pool, it's important to make sure that they know where the step out exits are and will not get stuck. Also, be careful to observe the animals just as you would children while swimming. Safety first!

As for Maui and Ruby, they are still very close friends and pool mates — and next time she leaps off her water slide, she may just choose to land on him for a change!
