A second night of unrest in the wake of the Southport stabbing led to the arrest of more than 100 people in central London.

Protesters gathered in Westminster on Wednesday evening to attend the ‘Enough is Enough’ demonstration, two days after a mass stabbing at a Taylor Swift-themed event on Hart Street in Merseyside.

Alice Dasilva Aguiar, nine, Bebe King, six, and Elsie Dot Stancombe, seven, were fatally stabbed when a knifeman entered the dance class. Eight other children suffered knife wounds – with five of them in critical condition – while two adults were also critically hurt.

In London, arrests were made after demonstrators clashed with officers. The Metropolitan Police said: “Over 100 people have been arrested for offences including violent disorder, assault on an emergency worker, and breach of protest conditions. Some officers suffered minor injuries.”

Demonstrators were seen launching beer cans and glass bottles at a line of police in riot gear in front of Downing Street and throwing flares onto the statue of Winston Churchill in Parliament Square.

Violent incidents linked to the deaths of the three young girls were also seen in Hartlepool, Manchester, and Aldershot. Police in Hartlepool were attacked with missiles, glass bottles and eggs, Cleveland Police said. A police car was set alight during the violence after a large group of people gathered in the Murray Street area of the North East town on Wednesday evening.

A group of around 40 people, including children and young men wearing balaclavas, gathered outside the Holiday Inn hotel on Oldham Road in what appeared to be a stand against asylum seekers currently being housed in the hotel.

Chants of "we want our country back" and "shame on you" were yelled by the group, some of whom were parading cardboard banners around, as glass bottles were hurled at police vans, with eggs also smashed in the road.

The protests came a day after riots broke out in Southport, leading to several arrests. Police officers were attacked and riot vans were set alight as violence erupted in the area on Tuesday, following a vigil for the girls.

The unrest comes as a 17-year-old boy has been charged with the murders of the three girls.

Nigel Farage has rejected criticism that comments he made online had “whipped up” rioters in Southport, as the Reform UK leader was branded “nothing better than Tommy Robinson in a suit”.

Farage doubled down on remarks he made in a social media video in which he questioned “whether the truth is being withheld from us” following the killings of three girls in a knife attack at a Taylor Swift-themed holiday club on Monday (29 July).

The newly-elected MP has come in for strong criticism from Brendan Cox, husband of murdered MP Jo Cox, who told BBC Radio 4’s Today programme on Wednesday (31 July) that Farage’s remarks were “right out of the Trump playbook” and make him “nothing better than a Tommy Robinson in a suit”.
