Horses' Laughable Reaction to Spitting Alpaca Could Teach Everyone a Lesson in Patience

Anyone who's raised pets (or even kids) knows that sass comes in all shapes and sizes. It comes in many different forms, too! You can never truly anticipate when or how someone will throw shade, but when you spend enough time deflecting attitude, you can learn how to make the best of it.

Just ask the horses from Bardsea Alpacas and Llamas! They deal with all kinds of shenanigans from their pasture neighbors, but the good news is that they've learned to laugh at it, too. Their owner posted a hilarious example in a June 23 TikTok video when an alpaca decided to spray it, not say it, and the horses' responses couldn't be better! Take a look.

LOL! I've always heard about how alpacas and llamas spit when threatened, but I've never actually seen it happen before. It's like a spit-take in an old comedy film! The cloud of spit is quite funny to look at (and quite impressive, too), but it doesn't seem to do much besides entertain the horses... and the millions of people who have watched this video.

"Not you trying to calm him down so that he wouldn't spit on you," commented @hadid_sali. Desperate times call for desperate measures! The alpaca owner behind the camera knew that they could easily be the next target, but they weren't about to let that happen. Fortunately, the sweet-talking did the trick!

As entertaining as the sassy alpaca is, this video wouldn't be complete if it weren't for the horses' hilarious reactions. At first, they couldn't believe what had happened. Once they started laughing, though, all bets were off! Some viewers felt like the horses mocked the alpaca, but others think it was their way of enjoying the free shower from their friend.

Why Do Animals Spit?

Alpacas and llamas may be known for their impressive spitting skills, but they're not the only animals who salivate when stressed. There are species of fish and cobra snakes that use spit as a defense mechanism, which makes their saliva literally necessary for survival.

Llamas and alpacas don't spit venom, but their spit can tell other animals (and people) to back off. Camels also 'spit' as a distraction or defense, but this is more like vomiting than just spitting. Camels regurgitate food like cows, and they'll use this to tell others to give them some space!

Being spit on by an alpaca isn't on everyone's bucket list, but it's a relief that the horses didn't mind it. If anything, they got a kick out of their buddy's grumpy reaction!
