Will there be an Inbetweeners reunion?

Forget Oasis getting back together — The Inbetweeners reunion may finally be on the cards.

It’s something that’s been rumoured pretty much ever since the show’s primary cast of Simon Bird, James Buckley, Joe Thomas and Blake Harrison last appeared together on screen in 2014 sequel The Inbetweeners 2.

Together, the quartet brilliantly brought awkward young adults Will (Bird), Jay (Buckley), Simon (Thomas) and Neil (Harrison) to life as audiences followed their frequently embarrassing experiences of navigating that awkward area between education and real adult life.

First airing on Channel 4 in 2008, The Inbetweeners ran for three series and spawned two hugely successful movies, making series creators Iain Morris and Damon Beesley’s show one of the most popular comedies of the late noughties.

A fumbled 10th-anniversary special titled Fwends Reunited left both audiences and the cast themselves feeling a little short-changed in 2019 — but now, it seems a proper continuation could be on the cards.

Here’s what we know about The Inbetweeners reunion.

While appearing on a recent episode of the Always Be Comedy podcast, series star Thomas revealed that the cast has indeed talked about getting back together sometime soon, and even teased an idea for a potential third movie.

“All of us feel it would be nice to do,” revealed Thomas, referring to his castmates Buckley, Bird and Harrison. “We’re all still around, we’re all still in each other’s lives. We all still like each other. And if it was something that came up, I think we would want to do it.”

He went on to suggest that an idea for The Inbetweeners 3 could see the foursome head to Las Vegas, continuing the trend of the previous two films which saw the group head off on lads’ holidays to Spain and Australia.

Thomas also said that the time could finally be right for a new project now that each of the show's stars has had time to prove themselves creatively beyond their iconic Inbetweeners characters.

“We’ve all been able to go away and get various monkeys off our backs, in terms of things that we felt we needed to do other than The Inbetweeners to prove something to ourselves,” he continued. That said, he believes the pressure would still be high: “Everybody’s anxiety would be, ‘Will it be as good?’ That is what we would be going in with.”

This wouldn’t be the first time the show’s cast has got back together.

In 2019, Thomas, Buckley, Bird and Harrison appeared together for a Channel 4 anniversary show hosted by comedian Jimmy Carr. However, the format of the reunion caught audiences and its cast off guard, with viewers quick to label it as an awkward watch.

Buckley later said he felt as though he had come across as “a complete moron” after not quite knowing what he had signed up for.

Shortly after, he said that there wasn’t “enough money in the world” to get him to do more Inbetweeners content, mainly out of fear of ruining the programme’s legacy as a beloved comedy classic.

“I’m getting older — it’s looking like it might be the only thing that I do professionally that is universally loved,“ said Buckley during a radio interview. “There’s not enough money in the world for me to spoil that.”

That said, judging by Thomas’s recent comments Buckley may have since changed his tune.

The Inbetweeners is available to stream on Channel 4.
