Game of Thrones actor Gemma Whelan has revealed she is a Kevin McCloud superfan after finally getting to meet her hero.

The star of ITV crime drama The Tower got to meet Grand Designs host McCloud on The One Show and was completely starstruck to be sitting next to her idol - but he then revealed he and his family were huge Game of Thrones fans, too.

McCloud was promoting the 25th anniversary of Grand Designs, which is set to look back on some of the show's most remarkable builds in the new series.

Actor Gemma Whelan might have starred in big name shows such as Game of Thrones, The Crown and Upstart Crow, but she was completely starstruck to be sitting next to Kevin McCloud on Friday's The One Show.

The Grand Designs host was sharing his memories of 25 years of the property building show when Whelan, appearing to talk about the new series of The Tower, admitted to what a huge deal it was to meet him.

She said: "I'm such a fan, I'm delighted to meet you. I just love the show. I used to watch it with my dad growing up, we used to sit and watch you every time it was on and we would watch repeats.

"It's just so comforting, every time I happen to turn it on and I'm like 'it's Kevin!'. My husband knows. I mean, it's Grand Designs."

But McCloud then told her that he was a huge fan of her role as Yara Greyjoy, saying: "We're sat in our house watching Game of Thrones. The love is mutual."

Whelan continued: "(Grand Designs is) just such a wonderful show and the man makes it, it's really warm. We love it, it's part of our culture now, it's a national treasure that we all love and know, it's universal. So I think it's a really special place to hang out."

Also on Friday's show was Spencer Matthews, who has just completed 30 marathons on sand over 30 consecutive days, raising more than £500,000 for small charities.

But he told The One Show that he had also been keen to prove to his former self, who struggled with drinking too much, that he had the confidence to achieve something amazing.

Matthews, who rose to fame as one of the original stars of Made In Chelsea, has spoken often about his previous struggles with alcohol and how he has turned to fitness challenges since giving up drinking.

Asked about his motivation to keep going in the tough conditions, where temperatures soared to over 40 degrees throughout the day, Matthews spoke about the great work the charities he was supporting were doing in helping people affected by suicide, cancer or bereavement.

But he added: "There was a personal development element for me, I had a really turbulent relationship with alcohol for many years.

"Trying to prove a point to my former self that these things are achievable to me now that I've made better decisions with my life is very important to me. The former me would have no confidence in something like this. So for me, it marks a real landmark of development."

The One Show airs on BBC One at 7pm on weekdays.
