An eight-year-old boy has died after he was shot in the head at a farm in Cumbria.

Police and paramedics were called to the farm in the Warcop area on Saturday afternoon. Officers secured a firearm at the scene and arrested a man in his 60s.

The boy was airlifted to hospital but died overnight, Cumbria Police said in a statement on Sunday morning.

Emergency services were called to the scene at around 2.50pm on Saturday to a farm in the Warcop area following a report that a child had been seriously injured by a firearm at the property.

A firearm was secured at the scene and the boy was taken to hospital by air ambulance, having suffered life-threatening injuries to his head and face, Cumbria police said.

"Sadly, the boy has died overnight," the force said in a statement today. "Officers arrested a man in his 60s at the scene on suspicion of assault GBH.

"He remains in police custody but is now under arrest on suspicion of gross negligence manslaughter."

Police are yet to reveal the exact location or the name of the farm where the incident occurred.

The identity of the boy has not yet been revealed, although police may make this public in the coming days.

We don't know the exact nature of the incident and what led to the child being shot, nor do we know how many people were present at the time.

Police are yet to name the suspect, and typically only do so once someone has been formally charged.
