Labrador’s Smug Face When Dad Asks Who Dug a Hole Has People Cracking Up

There's a mystery afoot. Someone dug a hole in his dad's yard. And while he can't prove it, the dad seriously suspects his Labrador Retriever, Jax. The dog looked awfully suspicious during questioning. But somehow he managed to keep his mouth shut while his dad cross-examined him.

Jax is innocent, your honor. The dog was nowhere near the area when the alleged hole was dug.

But let's just say that the Chocolate Lab did commit the crime. Is it possible that he was playing it cool when questioned by his dad in the clip?

The footage shows the Labrador Retriever looking sort of smug while his dad asked him some very pointed questions.

"Did you dig that hole?" the man asked. "Hmm?"

The dog stayed silent, but there was something about his expression the man couldn't trust.

"Why?" he asked. Nope, sorry Dad. You aren't getting a peep out of Jax.

"Last week my mate was trying to hide his guilty looking face," the man wrote in the video's caption.

Commenters were cracking up at the dog's expression. "Staying silent until a lawyer is present," one person teased. "If the eyes close, the case is closed!" another commenter agreed. "Hmmm maybe I did, maybe I didn’t," joked someone else. "I have the right to remain silent," added one person as if reading Jax's mind.

Why Do Dogs Dig Holes?

We see it on TV and in movies all the time, a misbehaving pup will use his or her little paws to dig holes in the backyard. Why do they do this — do dogs have some sort of beef with the grass?

Dogs love to dig because their ancestors, wolves, liked digging. In other words it's instinctual. Dogs could no more stop digging than they could barking or chasing their tail. The main reason why dogs dig is because they're looking for prey. If your yard has mice or other vermin, dogs might dig more aggressively too.

Some dogs dig to give themself a place to stay cool on a hot day. They'll also dig so that they can bury things they've found. These are typically objects they don't want "stolen" from them, but are often things that humans need, like shoes or maybe even a favorite sock or two.

Some dogs dig to escape or go around barriers, like fences. While others dig because it is fun for them. A dog looking for an afternoon's activity might turn to digging to beat the boredom blues.

So if your dog has been doing a lot of digging lately, have no fear. It's a totally normal, if not a little bit annoying, part of pet ownership.
