9 new dating trends to know about, from swamping to thriftmatising
Forget cuffing season, and spread dating, data has shown we could be seeing some completely different dating trends in 2025.
‘No-habiting’, ‘Swamping’ and ‘Thrift-matised’’ are three of the nine crazes poised to shape dating behaviour in the future, according to new research. Others include: 'Rejuve-dating', 'Fiscal attraction', 'Thrift-matised', 'Loud-dating', 'Marmalading', 'Digital ex-pression' and 'Fine-wining'.
"This year's trends highlight the ever-growing impact society and pop culture has on singles dating experiences," says Eva Gallagher from dating app Plenty of Fish, who commissioned two polls to conclude the findings.
"Singles are prioritising meaningful connections and are being open and honest about what they’re looking for, which is exactly what we’re encouraging."
New dating trends explained
1. Swamping
When you find someone you can comfortably share your 'swamp' with and let go of the pressure to be anything but your true authentic self.
2. No-habiting
The opposite of co-habiting, this trend refers to those who want to wait that bit longer to move in with their partner because they value their personal space.
3. Fiscal attraction
When you won't settle for less and you're seeking a match who is financially secure, but who you also find attractive.
4. Rejuve-dating
When you cast away the blues and grow from past experiences so you can fully embrace the future of your dating journey.
5. Thrift-matised
When you like to go on dates but hit that sweet spot between being cheap and frugal. Hidden gems, loyalty cards - these are all your type on paper.
6. Loud-dating
This involves cutting to the chase, being open and to the point with what you want so you don't waste your time.
We've seen loud-budgeting become a trend with our finances, so why not apply the same principles to our dating life?
7. Marmalading
Experts say this refers to those who put their other half "before anything else", much like Britain’s most beloved bear’s love for marmalade.
8. Digital ex-pression
The stage after a break-up when you are done grieving and turn to social media to share how you are healing to confidently get back out on the dating scene.
9. Fine-wining
Proactively finding people to date who are older than you and who've aged just like a fine wine.
