What are the next steps in the investigation?

The DCYF says it and training school leadership "are cooperating with the Rhode Island State Police as they investigate the incident to determine if the youth involved will be criminally charged."

The DCYF says it has contacted union officials who represent training school staff members, reviewed surveillance footage with them and discussed the incident. Peer support was also made available to staff members, the DCYF said.

"Next steps will include a comprehensive critical event review with staff to determine what, if any, recommendations can be made and implemented to assure staff and juvenile safety" at the Training School, the DCYF said.
