"He's doing great," Napier said. "He's on schedule. And certainly, he'll get reps, he'll get his opportunity to compete."

The 6-foot-5, 337-pound Mazzccua, a transfer from Baylor, played with the first team at left guard to start spring drills before sustaining the shoulder injury.

Mazzccua started 10 of 11 games at Baylor last season, grading out as the second-best guard in the Big 12 according to Pro Football Focus and the 42nd best guard in the nation. His run-blocking grade of 78.5 was ranked the best in the Big 12 and 15th-best in the nation.

"Before his injury he showed that he was very capable," Napier said. "There will be some things that come with missing time but overall he's on schedule to be ready to go."

Napier also said offensive lineman Kameron Waites, who underwent surgery to repair a torn Achilles in January, is ahead of schedule.

"We anticipate him being available at some point during the season," Napier said.
