Former Byrnes football player Rashard Wright fatally shot

Recent Byrnes High School graduate and football player Rashard Wright was fatally shot Saturday at Culpepper Landing Apartments in Duncan, according to an email sent by the Spartanburg County Coroner’s office.

Wright was pronounced dead at Spartanburg Regional Medical Center on Saturday. The Duncan Police Department is handling the investigation. A suspect was taken into custody but has not been identified.

Since the news of his death, there has been an outpouring of support by the Byrnes community on social media.

"He was loved by many and loved life. It saddens us that he was taken too soon," wrote Wright's aunt Mary Wright in an email sent to the Herald-Journal.

Rashard, 18, was an honor roll student and a standout defensive back for the Rebels last season and was planning on attending school and playing football this upcoming fall at Benedict College in Columbia on an athletic and academic scholarship.

A GoFundMe has been set up by Wright's aunt to help fund the cost of his funeral proceedings.
