DAYTONA BEACH — Latitude Margaritaville residents quickly created a makeshift memorial for the late Jimmy Buffett in front of the house he owned here upon learning of the singer-songwriter's death on Friday.

The memorial includes a surfboard and a straw hat, a blender, bottles of tequila and beer, Hawaiian leis, pairs of flip-flops with handwritten messages and, of course, a shaker of salt.

Buffett, 76, died in his Sag Harbor, New York, home, but he owned properties throughout the world, including the modest bungalow he bought five years ago at 197 Island Breeze Ave. in Daytona Beach's Latitude Margaritaville community.

The fast-growing 55-and-older community was the first of several to be developed by Minto Communities as a real-life embodiment of the laidback tropical lifestyle that Buffett sang about in his songs, including his 1977 hit, "Margaritaville."

It is not known whether Buffett ever spent the night at his house here. He did, however, visit Latitude Margaritaville Daytona Beach at least twice: On July 26, 2018, when he bought his bungalow, and on May 20, 2019, when he welcomed the new owner of a house won on the television game show "Wheel of Fortune."

Here's what we know about Buffett's Daytona Beach house:

It's no palatial palace

Buffett's songs promoted the virtues of simple living where all one needed was a front porch swing, a six-string guitar and his favorite "frozen concoction."

The house he purchased for $425,850 at Latitude Margaritaville Daytona Beach would have been in keeping with that vision.

According to real estate websites, it is a 2-bed, 2½ bath single-story concrete-block stucco house with an asphalt shingle roof, a finished 3-car garage and a small open front porch. It doesn't appear to have ever had a front-porch swing.

He bought it through his personal real estate firm

Buffett's name does not appear on the deed for the house, which shows it was purchased on July 26, 2018 by Sadeca Realty LLC, whose principal address is in Los Angeles, California.

Florida incorporation records for Sadeca Realty list Jimmy Buffett as the company's sole manager.

Sadeca Realty is the company Buffett and his wife Jane used in 2013 to buy a newly rebuilt 3-bed Key West-style house at 135A Root Trail in West Palm Beach for $950,000, according to a Palm Beach Post article published that year. That house is across the street from a building the couple purchased via Sadeca Realty in 2002.

It's in one of the nation's fastest-growing communities

Latitude Margaritaville Daytona Beach, which welcomed its first residents in March 2018, has sold 3,346 homes as of the end of August, confirmed Minto spokeswoman Paula Robertson on Monday.

The 600 new homes Minto sold here in 2022 made Latitude Margaritaville Daytona Beach the 16th fastest-growing master-planned community in the nation and fastest-growing in Volusia County, according to the latest annual ranking by Bethesda, Maryland-based RCLCO Real Estate Consulting.

Residents say it's the lifestyle, not Buffett, that drew them

Bruce and Lori Savolainen were among the steady stream of Latitude Margaritaville residents who slowly cruised by to take photos of the memorial in front of Buffett's house on Monday.

"We moved here a year ago from California into Margaritaville because we love the lifestyle here," said Lori Savolainen, as she and her husband sat in their parked golf cart.

Noting that Buffett's house was pretty much the same as everyone else's at Latitude Margaritaville, Bruce Savolainen said, "I don't think of him as ever being ostentatious. He was somebody everyone could relate to."

Mike McLean and his wife Lisa bought their home at Latitude Margaritaville in 2019. They, too, were drawn by the "laidback, easy, enjoyable beach lifestyle," even though he added, "I'm not a Parrothead (the name for diehard fans of Buffett's music)."

"The man was a billionaire, but he certainly didn't come across as one," said McLean, who serves as vice chair of the Daytona Beach Planning Board. "His legacy will live on."

Margaritavillers have been holding tributes to Buffett

More than 400 Latitude Margaritaville residents gathered Sunday night in front of the house at 197 Island Breeze Ave. for a "Sunset Celebration/Candlelight Vigil," said Kelley Sarantis, who helped organize the event. "It was to reflect on what this man has done for our lives. We're here because of him," she said.

Sarantis, a longtime area Realtor, and her husband Bill, were among the Latitude Margaritaville residents who got to meet Buffett when he made the first of his two surprise visits.

On Monday evening, a second tribute was held a few blocks away where a group of musicians from Latitude Margaritaville called the Coral Reef Corner Band performed Buffett songs for two hours. "Without Jimmy Buffett, there is no Latitude Margaritaville," said McLean.

Buffett's death won't affect future development plans

Margaritaville Holdings is the company co-owned by Buffett that teamed up with developer Minto Communities to create the Latitude Margaritaville communities in Daytona Beach and Watersound, Florida, as well as in Hilton Head, South Carolina.

In a written statement, Margaritaville Holdings announced that Buffett's death will not impact current or future plans for Latitude Margaritaville communities. "Margaritaville is state of mind and Jimmy’s lyrics will continue to inspire everything we do, including our Latitude Margaritaville communities. He created the soundtrack and the people created the lifestyle that we honor and celebrate."
