Local Sports: SMCC, Huron, Carlson qualify for state golf finals

MONROE – New Boston Huron’s Brooklyn Burke was the individual medalist and helped New Boston Huron qualify for state at the Division 2 Girls Golf Regional at Sandy Creek Monday.

Burke and Airport’s Sophie Bucki both checked in at 89. Burke won the tiebreaker.

Huron shot 417 as a team to take third place.

Gibraltar Carlson (410) also made it to state by placing second behind Tecumseh (408).

Madison Cooper led Carlson with 98. She got help from Andria Konczal (102), Anika Irwin (104) and Madilyn Peterson (106).

Supporting Burke were Andrian Skene (103), Aubrey Moreno (108) and Addison Bozynski (117).

Airport (425) was fifth with 425. Natalie Kuti added a 106 and Hanah Roof a 107 for Airport.

PREP GOLF

SMCC punches ticket

YPSILANTI – St. Mary Catholic Central took second place in the Division 4 Regional at Washtenaw Country Club Monroe to earn a trip to the state finals.

The Kestrels shot 395 in a meet that was ruled by Ann Arbor Greenhills with 358.

Elizabeth Zwack had the sixth-best round of the day for SMCC with 92 and teammate Nora Kinsey was a stroke behind. Ana Cuccia (101) and Tori Busen (109) were the other counters for SMCC.

Summerfield placed eighth with 499. Brea Olmstead led the Bulldogs with 110.

Flat Rock finished ninth

GROSSE ILE – Flat Rock shot 454 Monday to finish ninth in the Division 3 Regional at Grosse Ile Country Club.

Elyse Rogier carded a 101 to tie for 12th place.

Williamston won the meet with 357.

Jefferson holds off Rams

MONROE – Jefferson seemed on its way to an easy win over Flat Rock Monday in the opening round of the Huron League Tournament after winning the first two sets.

But Flat Rock had other ideas.

The Rams fought back to win the next two before Jefferson finally pulled out a 25-20, 25-23, 21-25, 22-25, 15-11 victory.

“We really showed up aggressive tonight taking the first two sets,” Jefferson coach Kylie Ely said. “As a team, we showed a lot of heart and resiliency.

“It was a total team win. Our defense has carried us a lot this season and tonight our offense really stepped up and put the ball down when we needed it.”

Meagan Middleton recorded 19 digs, 12 kills and 2 aces, Gracie Jones 16 kills and 9 digs, Lindsey Gennoe 40 assists and 17 digs, and Anna Boggs 11 kills and 16 digs.

Many contribute for SMCC

MONROE – Jada Worrell delivered 4 aces and Analiese Flint contributed 6 kills, 2 blocks and hit 1.000 as St. Mary Catholic Central showed its depth in a 25-8, 25-17, 25-16 win over Airport in the Huron League Tournament Monday.

Other standouts for the 22-4-1 Kestrels were Mckenna Payne (30 assists, 8 digs), Jessica Coslow (8 kills, 17 digs), Jillian Anderson (2 blocks), Madeline Dettling (5 kills), Ashley Ruhlig (12 digs), and Olivia Beaudrie (8 digs).

Airport (9-20-1) got 6 kills from RaeAnn Drummond, 9 assists and 6 digs from Joelle Shrewsbury, and 9 digs from Madi Boehm.

Peyton Zajac recorded 33 assists, but Airport lost to Pontiac Notre Dame, Bronson, and Imlay City in a quad Saturday.

Boehm (31 digs) and Renee Shrewsbury (22 kills) also played well.

Milan sweeps Pirates

RIVERVIEW – Milan opened the Huron League Tournament with a 25-14, 26-24, 25-23 victory over Riverview Monday.

Madison Slack (15 assists, 7 aces, 4 kills, 4 blocks), Malea Wourman (8 kills), Courtney Nye (6 kills), and Mariah Stines (6 blocks) led the Big Reds.

Ida holds off Bedford

TEMPERANCE – A nice passing play from Brandon Commet to Jaxon Bolster and back to Comment produced the winning goal for Ida in a 2-1 victory over Bedford Monday.

Dane Holycross fed Grantham Nelson for the first goal and defenders Wade Johnston, Zach Hemry, Davin Slater, Donnie Lutz, and Nelson stood out for the Blue Streaks.

Trojans win at home

MONROE – Monroe (12-5-2) closed out its home season with a 2-1 victory over Ypsilanti Monday.

Jovanny Gallegos and Logan Brockway scored with assists going to Bryson Lane and Austin Dunn.

“It was an appropriately entertaining end to a season that has seen so many thrilling and closely contested games at Bunkelman Field,” said Monroe coach Ian Cooke. ”Jovanny Gallegos was everywhere we needed him and the experience of seniors like Trevor Mann, Austin Dunn, and Lucis Rzepa kept Ypsi’s forwards at bay.”

Airport dominates second half

BLOOMFIELD HILLS – Airport scored six times in the second half to pull away from an 8-0 win over West Bloomfield Frankel Academy Monday.

Nolan Sanders netted half the goals and assisted on two others, giving him 38 goals and 27 assists this season. He needs one goal to tie the school record for goals set by Travis Campbell in 2013.

Isaiah Chapdelaine scored three times, giving him 17 for the season. Corbin Derry had the other goal for the Jets and Tayton Ruhlig made 3 saves for his fourth shoutout of the season.

Airport ends the regular season with a school-record 16 wins (16-5-1) and 98 goals.

Seniors lead on Senior Day

MILAN – Noah Bussell racked up two goals and an assist and fellow senior Carter Higgins notched a goal and two assists as Milan beat Ypsilanti Lincoln 6-0 on Senior Day Monday.

Nolan Matley and Wesley Murphy each added a goal and an assist and Fred Brown had the other Milan goal.

Parker Beard, Gavin Tomecek, Beau LeBlanc, Zander Parris, Richard Burd, and Sean Cook also played well.

CROSS COUNTRY

Huron captures crown

NEW BOSTON – New Boston Huron’s boys won the Division 2 title at the Wayne County Championships Saturday at Willow MetroPark.

Lucas Kuhn led the way in 11th place. Lucas Worrell and Louie Macon hit personal-best times and Luke Dulecki, Cameron Crane and Kyle Biller also ran well.

Cole Druyor hit his best time to lead the junior varsity team.

Pilachowski leads the way

PORTAGE – Jefferson’s Jenna Pilachowski took 12th with a personal-best 18:43 for the best Monroe County Region showing at the prestigious Portage Invitational Saturday.

Riley Peer ran 20:49 as the Bears took 24th out of 45 teams.

Monroe’s Andy Foshag placed 49th to help Monroe’s boys take 30th place. Myles Bray, Reggie Geftos, Parker Bomia, Chris Stein, and Jonathan Weber also ran well for the Trojans.

Dane Hieronimus helped Bedford’s boys place 29th.

Jefferson’s boys were 39th led by Xander Hartunian and Will Steinhour.

Mason boys second

HUDSON – Austin Sulier finished sixth, Parker Campbell 12th, and Jackson Carner 31st to help Erie Mason’s boys take second place in the large-school division of Saturday’s Hudson Invitational.

Mason didn’t field a full girls team, but Bailey Meiring was 34th and Riley England 47th.

Individual runner-up Isaak Rubley helped Dundee’s boys take 12th. Caiden Brown, Ethan Eby and Lukas Cranson hit season bests.

Dundee’s girls placed eighth led by Kaylee Hovey (17th) and second-best times from Brianna Cousino and Sophia Crom.

JUNIOR VARSITY SOCCER

Dramatic win for Monroe

WYANDOTTE – Luis Diaz scored off a deflected cross with one second left to give Monroe a 2-1 win over Riverview the title of the Wyandotte Tournament Saturday.

Cooper Robinson scored the other Monroe goal on a header.

Earlier, the Trojans tied Inter City Baptist 0-0 and beat Wyandotte 5-2 on a hat trick by Tobin Becker and goals from Cooper Robinson and Colin Gray.

JUNIOR VARSITY FOOTBALL

Snavely scores three

MONROE – Keoni Snavely scored three touchdowns, but it was not enough to keep Monroe from dropping to 3-4 with a 33-20 loss to Dexter Thursday.

Josh Williams recovered a fumble and Davian Davis recorded a sack.

ADULT SOCCER

Kull nets hat trick

Justin Kull scored three goals and Gabe Gelso and Ben Winter added two each to lead Lamour Printing past Old Crows 9-4 in the Monroe Indoor Coed Fall Soccer League at LevelUp Training Sunday night.

In other action, Julio Vargas and Eduardo Aldana both scored two goals each to lead Deportivo to an 8-2 win over Athletico.

Stephanie Zecman scored both goals for Athletico.
