Texas Tech basketball lands West Virginia transfer Joe Toussaint

Updated

Coach Grant McCasland has the final piece to his first Texas Tech basketball team accounted for.

West Virginia transfer Joe Toussaint announced on his Instagram page that he will be joining the Red Raiders for the upcoming season. On Saturday, McCasland announced the addition of six new members of the coaching and support staff.

Toussaint, a 6-foot guard, spent three years at Iowa before joining the Mountaineers last season, where he averaged 9.4 points on 32.7% shooting from 3-point range and was a 78.7% free-throw shooter. Toussaint entered the transfer portal shortly after Bob Huggins elected to resign as West Virginia's head coach following his arrest for DUI in Pennsylvania.

Several players opted to hit the portal following Huggins' resignation. Kerr Krissa, who previously transferred from Arizona, opted to return to Morgantown. Toussaint joined Tre Mitchell in leaving the Mountaineers. Mitchell committed to Kentucky last week.

Toussaint will likely occupy the 13th and final scholarship spot for the Red Raiders. Eleven players are currently on the Tech roster while Toussaint and Devan Cambridge, the Arizona State transfer who committed on June 23, have yet to officially sign with the team.

The pair are slated to join returners Lamar Washington, Pop Isaacs, D'Maurian Williams, Robert Jennings and Kerwin Walton; fellow transfers Chance McMillian, Darrion Williams and Warren Washington; and incoming freshmen Drew Steffe and Emeli Yalaho.

The addition of Toussaint adds more depth to the Tech backcourt, which is looking to replace the majority of last year's production. Texas Tech is coming off a 16-16 season in which the team lost in the first round of the Big 12 Tournament, losing to West Virginia.

Texas Tech's Kevin Bazzell was named to two freshman all-American teams recently.

Bazzell was named a first-team selection by Baseball America and a second-team honoree by D1Baseball.

The infielder hit .348 on the season with 24 doubles, 10 homes and 28 multi-hit games. He appeared in 63 of the team's 64 games, finishing second on the team in batting (.348) and second in RBI (62).

Bazzell was a first-team All-Big 12 selection and has now been named a freshman all-American in four publications, being honored previously by Collegiate Baseball and the NCBWA.
