If there's one item of clothing you want within easy reach heading into autumn and winter, it's a classic throw-over trench. And this particular style from Marks & Spencer, fits the bill perfectly.

This time last year it was forever wavering in and out of stock, but has just recently been restocked ready for the change in season.

Simple yet sophisticated in design, it's the type of coat that will elevate whatever you're wearing due to its timeless appeal. Plus, it has the advantage of featuring a high-tech and water-repellent fabric, making it not only chic, but functional, too.

Get plenty of wear out of this classic trench-style coat, available in both navy blue and beige.

Costing £65, it comes with close to 800 five-star reviews, with one shopper hailing it their "best buy this year", and others loving it *so* much, they purchased it in "both colours".

The Cotton Rich Stormwear Car Coat features a classic silhouette, that'll look on-trend for decades to come.

The large, tortoiseshell buttons elevate the design, giving it a more expensive overall look, while the coat itself looks equally as smart buttoned up as it does undone.

The raglan sleeves (which you can also roll up) give the coat a relaxed feel, while the side pockets are big enough to pop a few things in. There's a handy internal pocket, too.

The pièce de résistance? It's made using M&S's Stormwear fabric technology to ensure the garment is water repellent. Which, let's face it, is a must in the British weather.

Available in two easy-to-wear colours: navy and beige, it comes in sizes six to 24, but has been known to come up quite big, with shoppers sizing down a size or two for the perfect fit.

As for cleaning, you don't need to fork out on dry cleaning, simply wash on a delicate cycle at 40C.

Already selling fast and a bestseller in coats and jackets, we suggest snapping yours up as soon as you can.

It's a favourite among shoppers, with lots even purchasing the coat in both colourways. The only thing worth noting, though, is that it comes up quite big according to some reviews.

  • "I love the very smart but simple styling, and the fabric is really lovely. I wanted a smart but lightweight showerproof longline jacket and this is perfect. It’s a generous cut so I can comfortably layer in the cooler months."

  • "Just what I’ve been looking for. Lightweight and smart. Sleeves are a little too long, but overall a nice raincoat."

  • "I've yet to test the waterproofing of this coat but I love the look of it. Perfect for dashing to work and much more stylish than an anorak. Also, being petite, I find that traditional double breasted mac coats just drown me. This fits really well."

  • "Fantastic coat which I have in navy and natural. A little on the big sizing wise so I have size 8 and 10. Went to a local show in the navy yesterday and had lots of comments about it and how waterproof it was in the showers. Absolutely love it. Non fussy but classy style."

  • "This coat is excellent value for money. As other reviewers have noticed, it is fairly big so probably best to size down."
