Maine Coon Cat Babysitting Precious Kitten Is Too Cute

It is often thought that the only cat who will be kind to kittens is the babies’ own mother, but that is simply not the case. Cats are social animals, and naturally gravitate toward large family groups. And though it pays to keep an eye on kittens in your home because animals can act violently out of territorial instinct, if your pet’s character is well-understood and there is little cause for stress or strife, there’s no reason why an unrelated cat can’t get along perfectly well with a new kitten.

In this video, a cat parent describes what it was like during a weekend spend cat-sitting a tiny kitty, and how each of the felines in her home responded to the new arrival.

The happiest cat to have a kitten in his home for the weekend was Giuseppe the Maine Coon. In this clip, you can see the Maine coon cat watching over the kitten as he frolics around the hallway. In another reel shared to the same social media page, Giuseppe has the kitty in a cuddly headlock and is grooming him.

Having once had to trap my own kid in order to brush knots out of her head, I know exactly how he feels.

Unfortunately, his two cat sisters in the house were not as interested in spending time with the kitty, and were even suspicious of the young cat’s presence.

Tips on Bringing a New Kitten Into Your Home

The person in this video is being very careful when working with a new kitten in the home. They know the character of their cats and is keeping the kitten separated froth ones who are not as open to receiving a feline guest. Furthermore, they are even watching Giuseppe with the kitten and making sure everything is sweet and harmonious.

When bringing a new kitten to meet established cats in the household, it’s best to introduce them slowly, and give them separate rooms from which to sniff at each other, as well as separate spaces to retreat to while they are still figuring things out. Plenty of treats, careful supervision and a good deal of “alone time” can also make the transition smoother and help the cats learn to love one another.

The allogrooming behavior seen by Giuseppe—where he takes on the mantle of mama cat and tries to care for the baby by holding him down and grooming him, is an especially promising sign that he views the new kitty as part of the household. Allogrooming is a feline behavior that only takes place between cats as a bonding activity.

Is a Maine Coon Cat Right For You?

Maine Coon cats, as a breed, are thought to be an especially social and kind type of cat, so it may not be surprising that Giuseppe, out of all the cats in the household, most readily took to the kitten and was determined to show him a good time.

Maine coon cats are very large, long-haired breeds of cats with large, tufts ears and fluffy tails. They are growing in popularity as a breed due to their striking physical appearance and supposedly “dog like” behavior, which includes a love of doing tricks and even swimming.
