Maine Woman Who Feeds Raccoons and Cats on Her Back Porch Is a Real-Life Snow White

Generally speaking, feeding wildlife while visiting an outdoor area isn't recommended. Animals can quickly become reliant on humans for food, and then they're out of luck when those humans leave. When you live out in the forest, however, you may be able to offer animal friends consistent, safe snacks that don't mess with their diet or natural instincts.

Just look at the Daily Hiss Crew! This is a group of raccoons and cats from Maine who all found a friend (and chef) in one generous resident. She feeds them all from the comfort of her porch, and she's taken in many of the cats as indoor/outdoor pets. Every video she shares of the crew proves how kind she is to these animals, but one feeding with the 'Friday Friends' shows just how seamlessly everyone gets along. It's downright impressive!

OMG--those raccoons practically walk into her home! They knew exactly why they were there and what they were looking for, but they happily returned outside as soon as they received their snacks. They were quite eager but, overall, such polite guests.

Commenter @weatherwifey1018 isn't the only one who thinks these neighborhood raccoons are "the cutest trash pandas ever!" Some raccoons can be mean and pushy, but others, like these critters, are much calmer around humans. This can be a good thing or a bad thing depending on the situation, but clearly, this real-life Snow White doesn't mind feeding her animal friends.

In fact, raccoons aren't the only animals she feeds! Callie, the female calico cat (I see how she got her name),v was waiting at the door alongside her ring-tailed pals, but she wasted no time hopping over them all to make herself comfy indoors. It's so cool to see how these two different species get along so seamlessly, especially with food around. Even so, this animal lover is careful to keep her indoor cats enclosed in other rooms when feeding the wild raccoons.

Is It OK to Feed Raccoons?

Although it's never advised to feed wildlife while you're traveling (their food supply will suddenly disappear!), you may be able to safely feed animals from your home. The woman behind Daily Hiss began feeding feral cats in the neighborhood over ten years ago, but she quickly realized the kitties weren't the only ones having a snack! Because the cat food also attracts raccoons, she has been feeding them both for the last decade (after all, raccoons live for a long time). What a generous person!

If you decide to feed and befriend local birds or wildlife, make sure to research what they naturally eat. Please don't divert from their natural diet! Raccoons have a more variable palate due to their scavenging nature, but even these trash pandas require specific foods that are safe for them to eat. The Daily Hiss Crew knows what they're doing!
