Map shows UK flood alerts as weather warning for heavy rain in place

The Met Office has issued a new yellow weather warning for heavy rain as much of the UK continues to contend with severe flooding.

The warning was issued early on Tuesday and is in place until 4pm, covering the East Midlands as well as parts of the east and south east of England.

It means there is a chance of flooding and travel disruption in areas such as Milton Keynes, Cambridge, Luton, Peterborough and Leicester.

According to the Environment Agency, there are more than 50 flood warnings in place across England, meaning flooding is expected, and more than 120 flood alerts, meaning flooding is possible.

On Monday, the Met Office said six counties in England, including Buckinghamshire, Northamptonshire and Oxfordshire, had their record rainfall for September last month, as the country has been battered by wet weather in recent weeks.

While the middle of this week is expected to dry out somewhat, forecasters are warning of more rain this weekend.

A Met Office spokesperson told Yahoo News on Tuesday: "An Atlantic low pressure system will bring frontal systems in from the west on Friday, bringing wet and windy weather for many for the weekend.

"There is still some uncertainty on the eastward extent of this system and the associated rain amounts and wind strengths, therefore, for now no warnings have been issued.

"However, this may change over the coming days as the situation becomes more clear, so it’s important to check the latest forecast for your area."

London and the South East

• Tuesday and Wednesday

Dry and perhaps sunny in the far south to start, but a band of cloud and rain sinks south during the day to most parts. The rain heavy at times, especially from London northwards. Occasionally breezy, rather cool in rain. Maximum temperature 16°C.

Remaining mostly cloudy overnight and breezy at the coast. A few outbreaks of rain or showers, but many places staying dry. Mild. Minimum temperature 11°C.

Mostly cloudy and damp to start on Wednesday, but brightening a little up through the day. Isolated showers, mainly around eastern coastal parts where it will be breezier. Feeling warmer inland. Maximum temperature 17°C.

• Thursday to Saturday

A much drier, quieter spell of weather with generally light winds. Some overnight mist and fog possible with colder nights, but temperatures near or slightly above average by day.

South West

• Tuesday and Wednesday

The morning will begin rather cloudy with the odd spot of rain. Skies will brighten with some sunny spells developing, though the odd shower is likely to develop in the west, and later cloud will increase further east. Breezy. Maximum temperature 17°C.

Most places will have a dry evening, although cloud will gradually increase from the northeast as the night unfolds, with a few spots of light rain developing. Winds slowly easing. Minimum temperature 10°C.

Wednesday will be largely dry with some bright or sunny spells, though there will be a chance of a few light showers developing. Feeling pleasant enough in fairly gentle winds. Maximum temperature 17°C.

Thursday and Friday both look generally fine and settled. Some morning fog and patchy frost, otherwise sunny spells and light winds. Turning rather wet and more windy come Saturday.

Midlands

• Tuesday and Wednesday

Overcast with a spell of persistent, occasionally heavy rain developing this morning. Rain tending to ease during the afternoon, but remaining cloudy with a few heavier bursts still possible. Rather windy, accentuating the cold feel for the time of year. Maximum temperature 15°C.

Remaining cloudy and breezy overnight. Outbreaks of rain continuing for many, especially in the east, but becoming increasingly isolated and patchy in nature by morning. Minimum temperature 10°C.

• Tuesday and Wednesday

Often cloudy with occasional, mainly light rain or showers. Some drier spells are still likely however, particularly during the afternoon. Strong winds only very gradually easing through the day, so still feeling rather cold for the time of year. Maximum temperature 13°C.

A few passing showers around, but many places staying dry overnight. Cloudy skies eventually giving way to clearer spells by dawn. Lighter winds developing away from coastal areas. Minimum temperature 8°C.

On Wednesday, there will be variable cloud, but a much brighter day than of late. Many places dry aside from the odd light shower and with lighter winds. Maximum temperature 14°C.

North West

• Tuesday and Wednesday

Mostly dry at first with bright spells. However, cloud slowly increasing from the east through the morning with some patchy rain developing, especially over hills inland, where also rather windy. Some areas near to the west coast staying largely dry. Maximum temperature 15°C.

The evening will be rather cloudy and breezy with patchy rain. It will become largely dry overnight though with some clear spells developing. Remaining mild, with winds slowly easing. Minimum temperature 8°C.

Wednesday will be largely dry with some bright or sunny spells. Just a small chance of a light shower. Feeling pleasant enough in fairly gentle winds. Maximum temperature 16°C.

Scotland

• Tuesday and Wednesday

It will be mainly dry and bright with some sunny spells. However, the odd shower is possible and feeling chilly on North Sea coasts with a brisk northeasterly wind. Maximum temperature 14°C.

Any isolated light showers soon dying out, dry for most with the cloud thinning and breaking. Chilly under clear skies with patchy frost and fog. Minimum temperature 3°C.
