WORCESTER — A new Mexican express restaurant is now open at the DCU Center, the venue announced Monday.

Toro Loco Taqueria now occupies the 1,200-square-foot space located at the corner of Foster and Commercial streets. The spot was previously the home of Glazy Susan Specialty Doughnuts, which announced its closure in January.

The new Mexican eatery is owned by Miguel Perez and his wife, Denise Medina. According to the news release, the menu is based on family recipes that originate from their upbringing in Union de Tula, a town in Jalisco, Mexico.

"We're going to offer the most authentic tacos that we can: Quesadillas, burritos," Perez said. "We want them to experience that flavor and maybe make it one of their spots to have lunch, have dinner."

Perez and Medina moved from Southern California to Spencer about 11 years along with their two daughters.

Perez said he is the second generation in his family to work in the culinary industry. He has operated restaurants for the Mexicali Cantina Grill restaurant company and his family currently operates Mexicali Cantina Grill in Spencer.

Perez said Edgar Luna, the business development manager for the city's executive office of economic development, was key in supporting Perez in finding a spot in Worcester and connecting him with the DCU Center to open the new downtown location.

"We saw the potential here. It's something that we were looking for," Perez said.

Perez said he is happy to have a location downtown that is right next to the DCU Center.

Work to get Toro Loco to open has taken about two months, Perez said.

Toro Loco Taqueria will be open seven days a week: Sunday through Thursday from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. and Friday and Saturday from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m.

The restaurant's menu includes an assortment of casual bites such as tacos, burritos, quesadillas, desserts and tortilla chips and dips. Entree prices range from $14 to $16; single tacos are $3 to $5.

While the new restaurant will begin serving food this week, a grand opening event will take place the week of Sept. 4.
