Celebrity Race Across The World is under way, with Kelly Brook and Jeremy Parisi the surprise winners of the first leg – but who is leading in terms of the budget?

Each contestant on the BBC One travel series is given a budget of £1,100 (£2,200 per pair), the equivalent of an airfare from the start point in Belém, northern Brazil to the finish line in Frutillar, southern Chile.

Along the way, they'll have to decide where to splurge the cash on costs such as transport, accommodation and food, and where to cut back. They can also take on jobs during the race to earn back some money.

It's a tricky balance to strike as teams are aiming to hit the checkpoints first but if they burn through their budget they could end up stuck on a slower route or even be eliminated from the race.

The teams' financial decisions are already having an impact on how their race is going, as the amount they spent in week one correlated to where they finished in the first leg for many of them.

Kelly Brook and Jeremy Parisi spent the second most but came in first. However, Kola Bokinni and Mary Ellen spent even more than Brook and Parisi but were lagging behind the others in last place.

Just one episode in, the contestants' different attitudes to spending are already showing. A few of the pairs have had some friction over budget already as they decide where to focus their funds.

The Radio 2 DJ married Sam Vaughan just a couple of months after filming the series so they obviously managed to overcome their spending differences, but budget was an issue from the start.

In one scene, Vaughan asked a bus ticket seller for a discount and looked satisfied that she said yes, but Mills commented: "So that's 3 pence." Vaughan replied: "But, it's savings," as Mills chided him: "Get your money out, Martin Lewis."

Speaking ahead of the race getting started, Mills said: "Sam is one of the tightest people I've ever met in my life, and I say that with love."

Vaughan admitted: "I just like to make sure that I get the better value for everything, so I'll set the washing machine and dishwasher for midnight because it's the cheapest rate."

The father and son were involved in the first argument of the series which kicked off over a seemingly innocent conversation about spending.

They had stopped to eat dinner and Freddy joked that if he had control of the team's cash, he would have bought a bucket of ice cream - but his dad snapped: "You can just say if you really want something. It's our money...You don't need to do stuff on the quiet. It's better for our family if we're just open and honest with each other."

His comment clearly hit a nerve, as Freddy shot back: "I don't think we're even open as a family though. I stayed quiet because I feel like that's what everyone else does."

An annoyed Jeff asked: "Are you joking? Freddy don't be unfair. What have I done for the last seven or eight years? Don't say that I don't. Take responsibility, that's part of this."

They later made up with a hug, but not before Jeff had stormed off leaving Freddy saying: "Part of me came on this race to open up with my dad and already he's storming off. That's not good. He might not like what I say, I'm just trying to talk to him really but it's hard."

Brook appeared much keener to splash the cash than her husband Parisi – but they appeared to come to a compromise, as while they spent the second most, they did reach the checkpoint first.

Parisi was keen to save money on overnight buses and by working, while Brook complained about missing out on experiences and having to travel on a budget.

One viewer commented: "'It's not who can save the most money' Kelly there, showing she has not watched this show. Ever."

Someone else joked: "According to Kelly Brook. It’s 'Celebrity Take Your Time Across The World’." Another viewer added: "If it was up to Kelly, I doubt they would even get to first checkpoint, before the others have crossed the finish line. She is going to drive her husband bonkers."

Despite viewers' criticisms, they were the surprise winners of the first leg as Brook said: "I wish we'd seen more, but Jeremy's a winner, I want him to be a winner."
