Just like miniature fluffy cows, miniature donkeys have increased in popularity in recent years primarily due to social media and everyone wanting one of these sweet and fun-size animals.

As with keeping any livestock (Even miniature breeds!) you need to check with your local area's rules and regulations for keeping livestock. Miniature donkeys do better when they have a friend because they are social animals, and they usually need a friend to stay happy and healthy. Miniature donkeys are intelligent and can be trained to follow commands, pull carts, or participate in becoming a therapy animals where they can visit schools and nursing homes.

You also have to make sure your veterinarian knows how to care for livestock animals. Miniature donkeys need regular veterinary care , including vaccinations, deworming, and hoof trimming.

That being said, these cute animals are said to be gentle and affectionate, making them ideal pets for families with children, as long as you have the yard size and space they require! They form strong bonds with their owners and enjoy humans of all ages. You do need a large-ish yard to keep one or two, and an outdoor place for them to sleep.  The general recommendation for a mini donkey is .5 acres per animal.

You also need to be committed to the care of these animals for a long time, because the average miniature donkey lives anywhere from 25-35 years.
