The Batman 2 gets major filming update

The Batman 2 has been given a major filming update by director Matt Reeves.

Speaking about the anticipated sequel to the 2022 Robert Pattinson-starring DC movie, the director revealed that “the plan is to shoot next year” and they are “finishing up the script now”.

“Colin [Farrell] will be part of the movie,” he added to SFX Magazine (via Deadline) of the Penguin actor. “We’ve shared [the script] as we’ve been going along with DC and the studio and they’re super excited.”

He also teased that the upcoming Penguin TV series will act as an “entry point” to the next movie and is “absolutely connected to where we leave things in the series”.

“There are details that actually connect right into the way the next movie begins, and the way that Oz enters that world as we hand the baton back to Batman, and Batman is on another case,” he continued.

Reeves further expressed a desire for “these stories to be a meditation on the way Gotham is the way it is”, noting: “It’s such a brutal place and we’re digging for the answers as to why these people’s lives are this way.”

The Batman 2 will “dig into the epic story about deeper corruption, and it goes into places that he couldn’t anticipate in the first one,” he added.

“The seeds of where this goes are all in the first movie, and it expands in a way that will show you aspects of the character you never got to see.

“Batman is constantly battling these forces. But those forces can’t be entirely exorcised. So the next movie delves deeper into that.”

The comments come after star Andy Serkis teased back in June that production on the sequel would start in 2025, meaning the movie is unlikely to be released before mid-2026.

"Basically, I know nothing about the movie other than that I've just found out that we're probably likely to be starting filming early next year," he said (via Popverse). "Therefore, if you do the math, it'll be a year and a half after that."

The Batman is available to buy now on 4K Blu-ray, standard Blu-ray and DVD.
