Based on Glenn Stout's 2022 book of the same name, the film tells the true story of the first woman to successfully swim the English Channel.

Star Wars actor Ridley plays the lead role of competitive swimmer Gertrude 'Trudy' Ederle, the daughter of a German butcher from Manhattan who won gold at the 1924 Olympics.

In 1926, Trudy decided to take on a new challenge and cross the Channel, a feat that at that point had never been undertaken by a woman.

The synopsis reads: "Through the steadfast support of her older sister and supportive trainers, she overcame adversity and the animosity of a patriarchal society to rise through the ranks of the Olympic swimming team and complete the staggering achievement: a 21-mile trek from France to England."

Directed by Joachim Rønning, the supporting cast includes Doctor Who's Christopher Eccleston, Peaky Blinders' Stephen Graham, Killing Eve's Kim Bodnia and I Am Woman's Tilda Cobham-Hervey.

Young Woman and the Sea received rave reviews upon its release. It currently sits on an impressive 85% score on review aggregator site Rotten Tomatoes, after 75 reviews.

In our review, Digital Spy praised Ridley's "impressive" performance, adding: "As Trudy Ederle, the actor captures a sense of passion and unbreakable determination, which quickly turns her into a role model for young girls who want to swim or otherwise follow a different path than the one laid down for them by early-20th-century society."

Young Woman and the Sea will land on Disney+ on July 19.
