Doctor Who spoilers follow.

Doctor Who has unveiled a first look at the new Sonic Screwdriver for Ncuti Gatwa's Doctor, which features a meaningful message.

The Sex Education star will mark his first adventure in the TARDIS as the Fifteenth Doctor on Christmas Day (December 25). The festive episode — titled 'The Church on Ruby Road' — will see the new Doctor meet companion Ruby Sunday, played by Coronation Street star Millie Gibson.

In a special behind-the-scenes video posted to Instagram, Gatwa treated fans to an exclusive look at his new screwdriver and explained the special message etched on its case.

"We all know what the sonic screwdriver is. A magnificent piece of Gallifreyan technology that helps the Doctor through all his scrapes and has lots of useful nooks and crannies to it," he began.

"My favourite thing about the sonic is this message that is written in Gallifreyan symbols and it is a Rwandan proverb. It translates to 'the sharpness of the tongue defeats the sharpness of the warrior'".

Promo shots of the revamped screwdriver reveal its remarkably flatter shape compared to its predecessors — featuring a blue, gold and silver casing. The modern sonic is powered by a light-up purple crystal and sports a handy compartment that can be connected to other technologies, similar to a USB port.

After being compared to a TV remote by fans, Gatwa cleared up any confusion on his Instagram Story, saying: "There is a BIG difference between my sonic and a Sky TV remote," followed by a laughing emoji.

Gatwa's Sonic Screwdriver will have its first outing during the upcoming Christmas special, which will delve into Ruby's backstory and family life. The episode's first trailer features the appearance of an angry horde of goblins.

Speaking to Radio Times, producer Russell T Davies revealed the inspiration behind the fantasy-inspired special. "The show is taking a sly step towards fantasy, which will annoy people to whom it's a hard science-fiction show. Episode two next year is wildly fantasy. Completely making up scenarios on-screen that we've never been able to show before," he said.

Doctor Who's 'The Church on Ruby Road' will air on Christmas Day (December 25). The show airs on BBC One in the UK and Disney+ elsewhere.
