Evening Standard nominated for hat-trick of awards by London Press Club
The Evening Standard has been nominated for three London Press Club Awards.
The winners will be announced next month at a ceremony at Stationers Hall near St Paul’s Cathedral with the Standard shortlisted for National Newspaper of the Year, Court Correspondent Tristan Kirk nominated for Journalist of the Year and Junior Fashion Editor Joe Bromley in the running for Young Journalist of the Year.
Kirk was nominated for his work shining a light on the single justice procedure system which has seen vulnerable people dealt with by the courts without proper scrutiny.
The reporter, who previously won the Private Eye Paul Foot Award for Investigative and Campaigning Journalism for his work in the area, shone a light on “conveyor belt” justice.
Other nominees include The Mail and MailOnline, The Sun and The Times for National Newspaper of the Year and nods for political broadcasters, Beth Rigby for Sky News and the BBC’s Chris Mason, in an election year.
Chair of the judges and broadcaster Nick Ferrari said: “Given the seismic events both at home and abroad over the past 12 months, it was fair to hope for a good crop of entries for the awards - but it turned out to be exceptional. Great news for journalism, hard graft for the judges.”
The club traces its origins to 1882 when George Augustus Sala, a prominent journalist, illustrator and cartoonist of his day, presided over the inaugural dinner at Anderton’s Hotel in Fleet Street.
