Fact check: Video of Rishi Sunak has been manipulated

Correction: Amending month in par 5 to June

The Labour Party has shared a video on social media showing Prime Minister Rishi Sunak setting out Labour’s plans.

The video shows Mr Sunak saying: “Today I’m going to be doing an explainer on Labour’s policy for our country’s future.”

He then turns over the first sheet of a flipchart to show six points headlined: “Keir Starmer’s first steps for change.”

Evaluation

The video has been manipulated. The original video was posted by the Conservatives and shows an empty page when Mr Sunak turns the page of the flipchart.

The facts

At around 3.40pm on Sunday June 2 2024, the Conservative Party uploaded a video to TikTok intended to criticise what it suggests are Labour’s lack of plans ahead of the General Election.

A sheet of paper which Mr Sunak said would show Labour’s plans, had been left blank. Mr Sunak then shrugged and walked away.

At around 6.19pm, the Labour Party uploaded the same video to TikTok, however instead of a blank sheet, it had added its six “first steps for change” to the footage, above the caption “Thanks for the plug Rishi!” and a thumbs up emoji.
